Mavericks vs. Grizzlies Monday NBA injury report, odds: Spread jumps with Luka Doncic expected out again
With the possibility that the Dallas Mavericks might get back superstar Luka Doncic from injury for Monday night's game in Memphis, the Mavericks opened as 2-point underdogs at Caesars Sportsbook. However, with Doncic (officially questionable) reportedly unlikely to play, that number is up to Grizzlies -4.5 despite Memphis potentially playing without Defensive Player of the Year candidate Jaren Jackson Jr.
Doncic, second in the NBA in scoring at 33.0 points per game, has been out since March 8 with a thigh injury. He was at the team's shootaround this morning but must not have done much, as ESPN's Tim MacMahon tweeted "there wasn't much optimism" about Doncic's availability. The Mavs sit in sixth place in the West but are just a half-game up on No. 7 Golden State for the final official playoff spot.
Dallas is 5-9 without Doncic this season but has won its past two to open its current road trip. Maxi Kleber hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer for an upset win at the Lakers on Friday night. Kleber scored six of his 10 points in the final 7.2 seconds. Kyrie Irving led with 38 points and had the assist on Kleber's winner. Irving is listed questionable tonight but should play. He had missed three in a row before returning in Los Angeles. Tim Hardaway Jr. has been downgraded to questionable with a non-COVID illness. He had 12 points vs. the Lakers.
Grizzlies star Ja Morant is officially able to return from his league-mandated suspension Monday, but will likely not be back until Wednesday's game vs. Houston. Jackson Jr. has led the team in scoring the past three games, averaging 28.0 PPG in that stretch, but is questionable with left calf soreness. Jackson leads the NBA in blocked shots at 3.1 per game and is +140 to win Defensive Player of the Year behind Milwaukee's Brook Lopez (-140). Santi Aldama would likely start if Jackson can't.
Memphis is tied with Sacramento for the second seed in the West. The Grizzlies own the best home record in the NBA (29-5) and have won a season-high tying eight in a row at FedExForum. Memphis swept a home-and-home series with the Mavs on March 11 & 13. Both Doncic and Irving were sidelined in those games.
