Mariners vs. Cubs Wednesday MLB probable pitchers, weather, odds: Total up to 11 with prime hitting conditions for matinee at Wrigley Field

The Mariners close their series at the Cubs on Wednesday afternoon.

Totals for MLB matchups at Wrigley Field aren't posted until the morning before a game – they are for all other stadiums the day before as long as starting pitchers are known – because the winds can be so unpredictable. There were good hitting conditions Tuesday night when the Cubs beat the Mariners 14-9, and the weather should b even better Wednesday afternoon with winds blowing out to left field at nearly 20 mph and 80-degree temperatures. The game's total is 11 at Caesars Sportsbook and is still rising

The Cubs actually trailed Tuesday's game 7-1 entering the bottom of the third, but scored eight times to take the lead for good, topped by the first career grand slam from Nelson Velázquez, who had three hits and scored three times in his first start since he was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Monday.

Tuesday was the Cubs' first win after trailing by seven or more runs since April 14, 2018, vs. Atlanta (down 10-2, won 14-10). Chicago became the first MLB team since Sept. 27, 2001, to trail by seven runs by the second inning and lead by the end of the third.

Shortstop Dansby Swanson, the team's big free-agent acquisition in the offseason, was 4-for-4 with two RBI. It was the former No. 1 overall pick's fifth career four-hit game, but he left in the sixth inning with tightness on his left side – believed to be cramps. Swanson is batting .400 (16 for 40) in his first 10 games with his new team with five RBI but has not yet homered. There's a chance the Cubs give Swanson the day off if he's still having cramping issues and no sportsbooks are currently listing his props.

Chicago has won seven straight games vs. Seattle, the team's longest winning streak against an AL club since interleague play began in 1997. Marcus Stroman (2-0, 0.00) takes the hill today. Stroman's .128 average against is the second best in the NL. He is 1-1 with a 4.00 ERA in 18 career innings vs. Seattle.

The Mariners counter with Logan Gilbert (0-1, 3.60). It's his first career look at the Cubs, and Gilbert is 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA (21.0 IP, 7 ER) all-time in interleague play.

Both teams are off Thursday so both managers can use their bullpens liberally if need be.

There won't be too many double-digit totals at Wrigley in a given season. The number is the day's second-highest behind the 13 in Cardinals-Rockies.
