LeGarrette Blount's Future Remains Up in the Air
Where the NFL's reigning leader in rushing touchdowns plays in 2017 is totally up in the air.
After rushing for franchise-record 18 touchdowns last season, New England Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount could be in for a change of scenery.
According to BookMaker.eu, Blount had been a -125 favorite to re-sign with New England, slightly better than even money.
CBS SPORTS: HELLO, MIKE GILLISLEE
But then on Tuesday, the Patriots signed Buffalo Bills running back Mike Gillislee to an offer sheet, reportedly for two years and $6.4 million. Even though Buffalo hadn't yet decided whether to match, the move pushed the odds Blount remains with the Pats to 15/1.
The Patriots' backfield is extremely crowded as it is, and another body could spell the end for Blount despite his resounding success.
"If this deal happens, it likely means the Patriots are done with Blount, who is an unrestricted free agent," CBS Sports' Jamey Eisenberg said. "The Patriots have already added Rex Burkhead to their backfield, which includes Dion Lewis and James White, and Blount would not be needed since Gillislee could easily handle his role."
Also on Tuesday, the Pats gave White a three-year extension.
It might not mean the end of Blount's career, though. BookMaker.eu has identified several teams still in need of a ground-and-pound running back like Blount.
One team of note: the Green Bay Packers, who lost Eddie Lacy in free agency to the Seattle Seahawks. According to BookMaker, Blount is 2/1 to head to Green Bay, whose backfield is currently headed by Ty Montgomery.
Another option: the Philadelphia Eagles (7/2), who were ranked No. 11 in rushing yards per game last season, but didn't have any running back top 700 yards.
Also in the mix: the New York Giants (8/1), who released RB Rashad Jennings and were 29th in rush yards per game.
Other teams in the mix for Blount, according to BookMaker, include the Baltimore Ravens (25/2) and Oakland Raiders (10/1). The field -- any other team not listed -- is a -150 favorite to sign Blount in free agency.
