John Calipari a long shot to replace Phil Jackson in New York

With Phil Jackson out in New York, some intriguing names from across basketball have emerged to take over as team president of the Knicks. A sportsbook just revealed odds for who will get the gig.

Player movement will grab most of the headlines over the course of the next week as free agency gets underway, but there's a huge front office move that needs to be made in the NBA as well.

The Knicks parted ways with team president Phil Jackson on Thursday, ending a tumultuous three-year run which yielded an 80-166 record and zero postseason berths for New York.

Outside of the on-court emergence of young star Kristaps Porzingis, there's been little to celebrate during Jackson's time in New York – a brief era that was marked by controversy, dysfunction and overall failure.

“I had hoped, of course, to bring another N.B.A. championship to the Garden,” Jackson, an 11-time NBA champion, said in statement this week. “As someone who treasures winning, I am deeply disappointed that we weren’t able to do that. New York fans deserve nothing less. I wish them and the Knicks’ organization all the best -- today and always.”

Now the Knicks are searching for somebody to come in and help pick up the pieces after Jackson not only failed to build a winning franchise, but also feuded with team stars Carmelo Anthony and Porzingis.

Some big names around both professional and college basketball have been thrown into the mix. Sportsbook BookMaker.eu released odds on who will be the next president of the Knicks, and there are certainly some intriguing names in the conversation:

David Griffin -120 (Risk $120 to gain $100)
Cleveland's GM from 2014-17 who built the 2016 title team, but was relieved of his duties following this 2016-17 season

Sam Presti +350 (Risk $100 to gain $350)
GM for the Seattle SuperSonics/Oklahoma City Thunder since 2007

Isiah Thomas +500
Former NBA player, NBA and college head coach, NBA executive and broadcaster

Masai Ujiri +1250
Toronto Raptors' president/GM, named NBA Executive of the Year in 2013

John Calipari +3000
Head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats with prior head coaching stops at Memphis, UMass and with the New Jersey Nets

Field +150

The pick: Go with Griffin or the field at this point.

Intriguing rumors both quickly surfaced surrounding Ujiri and Calipari, but there doesn't seem to be much substance to either at this point.

Of the names list, Griffin, a free agent executive, has credibility and plenty of availability.

But picking the field is a savvy choice as well. A report surfaced on Friday that current Knicks GM Steve Mills is making a play to take over Jackson's position, so this search appears to be far from over, and plenty of names could still emerge.
