Gonzaga vs. Saint Mary's WCC Tournament odds: Despite regular season split, Zags taking heavy action to win championship game again
There are two ranked teams in action Tuesday around college basketball -- and they're playing each other, as No. 9 Gonzaga faces No. 16 Saint Mary's in the championship game of the West Coast Conference Tournament in Las Vegas. The winner gets the league's automatic NCAA Tournament bid, but the loser will be in the Big Dance regardless. Gonzaga is -2.5 and taking heavy action thus far. Click here for model picks.
At FanDuel, 56% of the handle and 69% of the bets are on Gonzaga. At -150 on the moneyline, the Zags are taking 73% of the bets and 84% of the handle. This is the shortest Gonzaga has been favored all season, and in fact would be the shortest it has been a favorite since December 2017. The Bulldogs were 3-point underdogs at Saint Mary's earlier this year and then -5.5 for the rematch in Spokane on Feb. 25, won 77-68 by Gonzaga.
Just as Gonzaga has dominated WCC regular-season play for years, it has done the same in this tournament, winning it 11 of the past 14 years. The only three it didn't? Saint Mary's prevailed. The Bulldogs are 50-5 under Mark Few in the WCC Tournament with title-game appearances in all 24 seasons. They are 31-3 in this event since 2009 when it moved to Las Vegas. The losses were to the Gaels in the 2010, 2012 and 2019 finals.
History will be made tonight as Drew Timme is five points from passing Frank Burgess as the leading scorer in Gonzaga history. Timme, the WCC Player of the Year for a second straight season, is currently at 2,192 points in his All-American career at the school, and this will be his final WCC game. Timme had 17 points in Monday's 84-73 win over San Francisco in the semifinals. Gonzaga leads the country in scoring, averaging 87.8 points per game and shooting 52.7% from the field.
Saint Mary's is the top seed in the tournament – the Gaels and Zags split in the regular season but St. Mary's won the tiebreaker, not that it really mattered with both getting byes into the WCC Tournament semifinals. Saint Mary's advanced with a 76-69 win over BYU. The Gaels shot 51.1% from the floor Monday, tied for the sixth-best shooting performance by the team in a WCC Tournament game since 2010.
CBS Sports currently has Gonzaga as a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament's Midwest Region and Saint Mary's a No. 5 in the Midwest. Tonight's winner could move up a full seed.Â
