Fantasy Football Week 9: Using man/zone scheme tendencies to get an edge in setting lineups, making DFS picks

Both season-long managers and DFS aficionados can gain an edge on the competition by digging into Jacob Gibbs' advanced matchup analysis.

The next wave of Fantasy football matchup analysis is here, and it involves focusing on defensive coverage scheme tendencies. SportsLine Fantasy expert Jacob Gibbs put an emphasis on quarterback and receiver performance when facing specific types of coverages in 2020, and it helped him predict massive performances such as Tyreek Hill's 60.9-point performance on DraftKings in Week 12 and Davante Adams' 47.6-point performance in Week 7. Earlier this season, Gibbs was all over Mike Williams in a matchup against Kansas City's man-heavy coverage scheme, and the result was a 36.2-point eruption on DraftKings.

Gibbs' Fantasy football draft rankings were the eighth-most accurate in the nation across the 2018-20 seasons, per FantasyPros, and he is back with weekly Fantasy rankings and a DFS Helper for SportsLine users. In 2018, Gibbs predicted Patrick Mahomes' Fantasy explosion. In 2019, he projected big-time breakouts for Lamar Jackson and Chris Godwin, while also identifying Darren Waller as the top late-round tight end pick. Last season, Gibbs was one of the few analysts who ranked Davante Adams as Fantasy's WR1 entering the season, and he was all over the breakout seasons for Calvin Ridley and Antonio Gibson. Anyone who has followed Gibbs advice over the past three seasons has been well on their way to a league title.

Now, Gibbs has analyzed the coverage scheme matchups for every game in Week 9 and found seven spots that stand out.

One matchup Gibbs is especially excited for in Week 9: Baltimore's passing offense against a Minnesota defense that uses zone coverage at one of the highest rates in the NFL. Lamar Jackson's splits have been significantly better vs. zone coverage, and the same has proven true for Marquise Brown and Mark Andrews over the past two seasons. There's significant shootout potential in this game if Kirk Cousins can move the ball against Baltimore's defense, and Baltimore's three-man stack offers the most highly-concentrated source of upside available anywhere in Week 9's slate if this game does turn into a back-and-forth affair.

So which players stand to benefit the most from their specific schematic matchups? And which underperforming WR could bounce back in a big way due to his matchup? ...
