The Kirk Cousins era in Atlanta got off to a rough start and already some Falcons fans and media are calling for rookie Michael Penix Jr., this year's No. 8 overall pick, to get a look under center. If Cousins struggles again on Monday Night Football in Philadelphia to conclude Week 2, the calls for Penix will get even louder. Cousins has a notoriously poor track record on Monday Night Football. The Eagles are 5.5-point favorites, down a point with All-Pro receiver A.J. Brown ruled out, with a total of 46, and the Eagles vs. Falcons weather should not be a factor. 

Cousins is just 3-10 in his MNF career, although this is his first such game with the Falcons, and those three wins have come in his past four tries. He was 0-7 as an underdog on Monday nights before leading Minnesota to a 22-17 home upset of San Francisco in Week 7 last year. The other two Cousins wins were at the Chicago Bears in 2021 and 2020. This will be the third straight season in which the Eagles will host a Cousins team in Week 2 in primetime. 

Last year on a Thursday night, the Eagles beat the visiting Vikings, 34-28, although that L certainly wasn't on Cousins since he threw for 364 yards and four touchdowns without a pick in one of his best career games.

It's the home opener for the Eagles. Before the game, the team will sign former quarterback and Super Bowl LII MVP Nick Foles to a ceremonial contract so he can retire as an Eagle. Foles will then serve as the honorary captain for the game.
