After a run to the semifinals in 2018, optimism is running high for England's chances ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which officially gets underway on Sunday, Nov. 20. England's roster for the tournament was met with scrutiny as familiar names like Tammy Abraham and Reece James were left off of it, but manager Gareth Southgate will say that speaks to the depth of talent in the group. England kicks off Group B against Iran on November 21, before a highly-anticipated match with the United States (Nov. 25) and its group finale versus Wales (Nov. 29) at the World Cup 2022.

The English have at least advanced to the Round of 16 in all but one World Cup since 1986. Prior to the last tournament, the Three Lions' last semifinals appearance came in 1990. In 2010, England advanced from Group C with the United States after the two nations tied 1-1 in their match.
