Eagles vs. Buccaneers betting preview: Odds, picks, props, trends, injuries, weather and more for Monday Night Football Wild Card matchup
The NFL's Super Wild Card Weekend concludes Monday night -- the last weeknight game of the season -- as the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles (11-6), the conference's No. 5 seed, visit the NFC South champion and fourth-seeded Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-8)Â in a regular-season rematch. Despite imploding down the stretch with a 1-5 record in their final six games to lose out on repeating as NFC East champions, the Eagles are 3-point favorites on the SportsLine consensus.Â
If the chalk holds this weekend, Monday's winner would visit top-seeded San Francisco next Sunday in the Divisional Round at a disadvantage on a short week. The NFL surely wouldn't put Monday's winner at a disadvantage by forcing them to play on Saturday on a markedly short week. As banged up as the Eagles are, however, having that extra day following Week 18 might have been a blessing.
A few Philly players have said that not playing at home might actually help matters right nowm simply to get away from the booing at Lincoln Financial Field. Can the Eagles flip the switch? They were 0-6 against the spread in their final six games, the first team to do that and make the playoffs since the 49ers failed to cover eight straight in 2002. Those Niners won their Wild Card game against the Giants but didn't cover and were then routed in the Divisional Round.
Pro Bowl defensive tackle Fletcher Cox said seems to think that the switch will be flipped, noting a different atmosphere in the team's facility leading up to the game: "You can just tell... It's a sense of urgency in the building. A sense of urgency in meetings. It's lit a spark under guys."Â
What else is Cox supposed to say? There is even speculation if Philly looks bad in a loss that head coach Nick Sirianni could be in some trouble, which seems far-fetched. But after watching legends Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll be forced out of their jobs in New England and Seattle this week, would anything be a surprise at this point? There is little doubt that Sirianni losing both coordinators last offseason -- former offensive coordinator Shane Steichen is the head coach in Indianapolis and former defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon the head coach in Arizona -- has had a major impact.
In Week 3 at Raymond James Stadium, the Eagles were 5.5-point favorites and beat the Bucs 25-11. Philly outgained Tampa Bay a whopping 472-174 thanks in large part to picking up 201 yards on the ground. Jalen Hurts threw for a score and rushed for one but threw two picks -- turnovers have been a problem for him. Baker Mayfield threw for 146 yards with a TD and a pick for the Bucs.Â
Mayfield, star wideout Mike Evans and other Tampa Bay players have downplayed that first game because it was so early in the season and they were learning a new offense (and each other) under first-year coordinator Dave Canales. Monday could be Mayfield's last game with the Bucs, as he was signed to a one-year deal off the scrap heap as a stop-gap QB post-Tom Brady. But Mayfield has played well enough that an extension is more likely than not unless he lays an egg here and the team decides to give 2021 second-round pick Kyle Trask the job going forward (or address the position in externally).Â
