Detroit vs. Youngstown State Horizon League Tournament odds: Titans star Antoine Davis favored to score at least 26 points, break Pete Maravich's NCAA all-time record
We've seen the NBA's all-time points record broken this year by LeBron James, and the NCAA record of 3,667 points by former LSU star Pete Maravich will be broken Thursday by Detroit's Antoine Davis if he scores 26 in what could be his final collegiate game. The eighth-seeded Titans are 9-point underdogs in their Horizon League Tournament quarterfinal matchup at No. 1 Youngstown State, and Caesars Sportsbook has Davis set at Over/Under 31.5 points (has to be the highest NCAA total of season), with the Under a short favorite.Â
No disrespect to Davis, but he's not in Maravich's class overall -- perhaps no one is. The Hall of Famer scored his 3,667 points in just three seasons at LSU from 1967-1970. Freshmen weren't allowed to play varsity basketball when Maravich was one, and there was no shot clock or 3-point arc in his career. LSU didn't play in the NCAA Tournament in any of those seasons, either. Maravich's career average of 44.2 points per game is absolutely untouchable. Pistol Pete's NCAA career-high total was 69 against Alabama on Feb. 7, 1970.
Davis' father Mike, the coach at Detroit since 2018 and the first coach post-Bobby Knight at Indiana, had his son study Maravich while learning to play as a kid. This is Davis' fifth season and 143rd game at Detroit, as he was granted an additional year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. His career average is 25.5 PPG, and he's sitting at 3,642 points following a 38-point effort in Detroit's Horizon League Tournament opening 81-68 win over IPFW on Tuesday.
The 6-foot-1 guard from Alabama, a two-time Horizon League Player of the Year, is averaging a national-leading 28.4 PPG on the year and has scored at least 26 in nine straight games. The last time he didn't? A 15-point showing on 5-for-18 shooting in a 73-63 loss at Youngstown State on Jan. 29. When Detroit hosted YSU on Jan. 12, the Titans lost by 15 and Davis had 32 points. Because Detroit is 14-18 overall, tonight will be Davis' finale unless the team pulls off the upset.
He could set another record as well. Davis has made 155 3-pointers this season, tied for fourth in NCAA history and seven away from the single-season mark of 162 set by Davidson's Stephen Curry in 2007-08.
