Clemson vs. No. 13 Virginia ACC basketball odds, bracketology: Tigers should be in NCAA Tournament with road upset victory
Normally, a team that is 21-8 overall and 13-5 in the ACC would be a lock to get an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, but the ACC is considered to be weaker than usual this season and that's part of why Clemson is on the Big Dance bubble as it visits No. 13 Virginia on Tuesday with the Cavaliers as 6.5-point favorites at Caesars Sportsbook. An upset should get the Tigers off the bubble.
Clemson was on the wrong side of the bubble following a terrible 83-73 loss at Louisville on Feb. 18 but has bounced back with blowout wins at home vs. Syracuse and at NC State. The 96-71 victory was the largest by a Clemson team against NC State since Jan. 13, 1940. The 25-point margin of victory was the fourth largest in program history for an ACC road game.
Brevin Galloway scored a career-best 28 points against the Wolfpack. PJ Hall had 20 points. He did take a hard fall on his back but is expected to play against Virginia. The junior center averages 15.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Despite both those players having big games Saturday, the ACC named Hunter Tyson as its Player of the Week on Monday, his second such honor of the season. Tyson averaged 20.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in the two games. His 14 double-doubles are tied for ninth all-time in Clemson history for a single season and are 12th in the country.
CBS Sports' Jerry Palm doesn't list the Tigers in his NCAA Tournament Bracketology, and ESPN has Clemson in its First Four Out. The Tigers have an NCAA NET Ranking of 60, with a quite good 4-2 record in Quad 1 games. Tuesday's outing is another such game.
Virginia (21-6, 13-5 ACC) could still win the ACC regular-season title and is in good shape to at least finish in the top four and earn a double-bye in the conference tournament (a win here clinches the double-bye). CBS and ESPN both have Virginia as a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
UVA had controlled its destiny to win the ACC but has lost back-to-back games against Boston College and North Carolina by a combined 23 points. Virginia had won 11 straight against Clemson in Charlottesville until the Tigers defeated the Cavaliers 67-50 at John Paul Jones Arena last season. UVA is still 14-3 in its last 17 meetings against the Tigers overall. This is the only scheduled meeting of the season. Virginia's only home loss this season was to current No. 1 Houston.Â
