Cam Newton next team odds: Former MVP throwing at Auburn's Pro Day; Chargers, Bengals, Rams, Lions could use backup quarterback

Auburn's Pro Day is today, which means all the potential future pros on the Tigers will work out for NFL scouts and the like, yet the presence of former Tigers Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Cam Newton at age 33 will upstage everything, as in a very unusual turn he will also throw at Pro Day in hopes of landing a free-agent contract with a team. Newton, who hasn't played since the 2021 season, announced via social media on Monday his plans to throw at his alma mater. In a short video, Newton said: "Tell me how these randoms keep getting jobs. Don't worry about it. I'm going to show you. I can't wait to show you. … Ain't 32 motherf------ better than me."

Newton won the Heisman Trophy and the BCS National Championship in his one season at Auburn 2010. The 2015 NFL MVP was last seen going 0-5 as a starter in 2021 with Carolina in a part-time starting role. Newton last was a full-time starter in 2020 with New England and was 7-8 in the Pats' first year post-Tom Brady. Newton's passing numbers were not good that year (eight TDs, 10 picks, rating of 82.9), but Newton was still a threat with his legs, rushing for 12 scores. Overall, Newton has a 75-68-1 record as a starting NFL quarterback and has run for more touchdowns than any quarterback in league history.

Carolina will not be bringing Newton back as that franchise is ready to move on with whichever QB it takes at No. 1 overall in the draft – CJ Stroud is the current betting favorite – and has signed Andy Dalton as a potential one-year bridge.

Both the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams have injury questions at quarterback with Kyler Murray, and Matthew Stafford, respectively, entering the 2023 season so perhaps they could have interest in Newton as insurance.

Newton would be an upgrade with a handful of teams as a No. 2, but some clubs likely are leery of signing someone of Newton's stature and risk wrecking the confidence of a young starting QB.

Why not the Los Angeles Chargers behind Justin Herbert? In what universe is Newton not better than current No. 2 Easton Stick? The Detroit Lions don't have a backup for Jared Goff. Do the Cincinnati Bengals really trust Jake Browning as the No. 2 to Joe Burrow? Newton might have fit behind injury-prone Tua Tagovailoa in Miami, but the Fins instead gave $8 million to mike White.

The Chiefs need a new backup to Patrick Mahomes with Chad Henne retiring. When the Packers trade Aaron Rodgers to the Jets, Green Bay could use a backup to Jordan Love, but Newton's shadow likely would loom too large there. 

Newton might have to wait until this summer to sign a deal if a team suffers a QB injury.
