Cam Newton's next team: Chargers reportedly out; Patriots favored on NFL odds
Cam Newton, the 2015 NFL MVP, will not be a member of the Carolina Panthers for much longer. The team on Monday told Newton's camp they could try to find a trade, and if the Panthers don't get a deal they like they are going to cut Newton because the Cats just signed Teddy Bridgewater to three-year, $66 million contract with $40 million guaranteed to be their starter going forward.
(Last month SportsLine oddsmakers listed odds on where Bridgewater would sign, and Carolina was the +200 favorite.)
The Los Angeles Chargers had been considered a potential destination for Newton after the Bolts lost out on Tom Brady to the Tampa Bay Bucs, but Ian Rapoport and the NFL Network are reporting that the Chargers are not expected to sign or trade for a veteran quarterback and will move forward with Tyrod Taylor as their starter in 2020. Expect the Chargers to also select a QB with the No. 6 overall pick in April.
With the Chargers supposedly out, that vaults the Patriots into the +300 favored role on the NFL futures odds to land Newton after losing Brady. Allegedly, the Patriots already have requested to look at Newton's medical records. Replace one former MVP with another! Here are the other options:
Redskins (+500) – Washington seems committed to Dwayne Haskins long term, but the 2019 first-round pick struggled to say the least in limited action a year ago. The Skins already lost former backup Case Keenum in free agency and Newton could mentor Haskins at a minimum. There's also the Ron Rivera factor as the new Washington coach was Newton's HC his entire career in Carolina but for the final four games of 2019.
Dolphins (+700) – Miami perhaps might consider a one-year stopgap like Newton while whichever rookie the Dolphins take at No. 5 overall in this year's draft, probably Tua Tagovailoa, sits and learns.
Chargers (+900) – Keeping L.A. as at least a longer-shot option in case something happens to Taylor.
Jaguars (+1200) – Jacksonville just traded backup Nick Foles to Chicago and doesn't have much else behind Gardner Minshew III.
Broncos (+1500) -- Denver boss John Elway is committed to Drew Lock as the starter, but backup Joe Flacco is a goner. Lock wasn't exactly the picture of health last year, either, so Newton could be a safety blanket.
