Antonio Brown odds update: With Kelvin Harmon out injured for 2020, Washington now may be option
It's still not clear what nickname the former Washington Redskins are going to take this season after officially retiring the Redskins name this week – Redtails/Red Tails, Red Wolves and Warriors are the leading candidates -- but the team got bad news Tuesday with projected starting wideout Kelvin Harmon lost to a season-ending torn ACL. He was injured getting himself in shape for the upcoming start of training camp. That injury could open the door for an Antonio Brown signing
Harmon was the No. 206 overall pick out of NC State in last year's draft. He had a decent rookie season in playing every game with 44 targets, 30 catches and 365 yards (third on team), although he never found the end zone. Harmon was certainly more involved in the offense later in the season.
Most teams start three wideouts these days and Harmon was listed as a starter on the depth chart alongside Terry McLaurin, who was terrific as a rookie in 2019, and Steven Sims Jr. Washington took just one wideout in the 2020 draft, Liberty's Antonio Gandy-Golden in Round 4. The team added veteran Cody Latimer in free agency, but he's in some legal hot water and may not even make the roster.
No question the team is incredibly thin at the position now, and it could lead to first-year coach Ron Rivera perhaps sniffing around two former Pro Bowl free agents in Brown or Josh Gordon.
Last month in speaking with the Washington Post, Rivera hinted that if several young receivers get hurt or underwhelm the team might need to bring in a veteran. Brown has worked out this offseason with Redskins second-year QB Dwyane Haskins.
"I know who Antonio Brown is," Rivera said. "I know he is a great player and an impact guy. He is also a veteran guy, and we have some guys that we have to find out about (first). That is the approach." So, not exactly a denial about interest in Brown.
This week, Brown fueled speculation he might be close to signing with a team as he posted a video of himself hopping on a flight, with the caption: "Himmothy on the way." Brown is +2500 on the William Hill moneyline odds to win NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Winning that award seems unlikely with Brown expected to face an eight-game suspension if he does sign with a team.Â
