Aaron Rodgers to Jets? New York's odds to win Super Bowl 58 improve nearly 30 percent in past 24 hours

The New York Jets are officially talking with Aaron Rodgers.

If Derek Carr was the New York Jets' fallback plan at quarterback this offseason, that option is off the table as Carr on Monday agreed to a four-year contract with the New Orleans Saints despite visiting with the Jets twice. News has now emerged that the Jets have had conversations with the Packers and quarterback Aaron Rodgers this week regarding a potential trade. At BetMGM, the Jets were +2500 on Monday to win Super Bowl 58. Simply because of those conversations (which are ongoing), they are now +1800.

The new league year starts next Wednesday and no trades can be made official until then. But if Rodgers is going to be dealt, a deal will likely be worked out  by the end of this week (and news will certainly leak) so the Jets can make other plans if they fail to land the future Hall of Famer – perhaps a pivot to Jimmy Garoppolo. He has ties to New York coach Robert Saleh from their time together with the 49ers. The Raiders also may chase Garoppolo.

Teams must be in compliance with the salary cap by the start of the league year. New York can't just add Rodgers' $59.5 million guaranteed this season without a bit of salary-cap work (although his cap number wouldn't be near that high), and that takes time. Green Bay may be required to retain part of his compensation to facilitate a deal.

It is expected that Rodgers would rework his contract to facilitate a trade if he wants out of Green Bay. If the Jets are speaking directly with Rodgers, he and New York would have had to secure the Packers' permission to do or face tampering chargers. "Rodgers is open to the idea of going to NY," NFL insider Trey Wingo tweeted on Monday night. The Jets' new offensive coordinator is Nathaniel Hackett, who developed a strong bond with Rodgers when Hackett was the former OC in Green Bay.

The Raiders had been favored at various sportsbooks to be Rodgers' next team if he leaves Green Bay, but they all now have the Jets as favorites. The speculation at the NFL combine in Indianapolis was that Rodgers would return to the Packers if he didn't retire. New York doesn't play the Packers this season.

If the Jets also miss out on Rodgers and Garoppolo -- and presuming Lamar Jackson is not available -- they may be forced to choose from a rather uninspiring veteran group of Carson Wentz, Marcus Mariota, Baker Mayfield and Jacoby Brissett.
