2024 NFL Super Wild Card Weekend Officiating Angles: Finding Edges in Browns-Texans, Dolphins-Chiefs and Rams-Lions
We went 2-1 last week, finishing the regular season at 34-20 (+12.0 units). We cashed with the Saints and Cowboys against the spread, but lost on the Broncos-Raiders Under. Now, with Super Wild Card Weekend upon us, we have isolated three games in which the officiating assignments could play a big role.Â
Joe Gibbs (not the Hall of Fame coach, the NFL referee expert who tweets @NFLrefstats1) is collaborating with SportsLine this season to provide weekly, referee-based betting angles. He analyzes the NFL ref assignments from the moment they're released each Tuesday.
While the NFL uses all-star officiating crews during the playoffs, it is still the head referee who sets the tone. "They mix and match side judges, back judges, etc., but honestly it doesn't change much," Gibbs said.
Before you make any Super Wild Card Weekend NFL picks or NFL parlays, you need to see what Gibbs and SportsLine senior analyst Larry Hartstein have to say about the head referees' tendencies.
We can tell you Hartstein and Gibbs are betting the Browns (-2) at Houston on Saturday, in part because Clay Martin drew the assignment.
"Clay Martin is calling an NFL-leading 56% of penalties on home teams this season," Gibbs noted. "Home teams went 4-10-1 ATS with Martin in 2023, continuing a career trend in which home teams have cashed 42% of the time with Martin."
The Texans tied with the Eagles for the most defensive pass interference flags. In the one game Houston played with Martin this season, a 24-21 home loss to Jacksonville, Martin's crew flagged the Texans for DPI three times. That could be critical given the Browns' extremely pass-heavy attack under Joe Flacco.
Hartstein also is sharing key officiating angles in Dolphins-Chiefs and Rams-Lions! You need to see this critical referee data before locking in your picks.
