2024 MLB futures, odds: Division winners, wild card betting strategy from proven expert
Can I tell you with absolute conviction what the six division winners will be at the end of the 2024 MLB season? I can't, but I can tell you that it will all but surely not be the exact group of the Orioles (AL East), Twins (AL Central), Astros (AL West), Braves (NL East), Brewers (NL Central) and Dodgers (NL West) for a second straight season. A full repeat of all six division winners has never happened. It rarely did when there were only four divisions.
Since 2018, no more than three teams have repeated as division champions, and that was the total last year. The Braves won the NL East by 14 more games than they did in 2022; the Dodgers won the NL West by six games fewer than in 2022 (yet still by a whopping 16); and the Astros won the AL West via tiebreaker after taking it by 16 games in 2022.
I'm using three as the baseline for picking 2024 division winners because that was also the number of repeaters in 2018, '19 and '20 before there were two in 2021 and '22. Because we believe in being thorough, we'll also include our wild card choices in the AL and NL.Â
