The 2023 Jacksonville Jaguars generated a lot of excitement heading into the season by coming off a strong run at the end of the year that included a come-from-behind victory in the wild card round. Set up with a schedule that featured several of the league's elite and also 10 games against the AFC South and NFC South, the Jaguars fell just short of their win total of 9.5. The topsy-turvy schedule led to them getting blown out one week (34-3 loss to the 49ers in Week 10, 30-12 loss in Tampa in Week 16) and then doing the blowing out the following week (34-14 and 26-0 wins against the Titans and Panthers).

This year's schedule looks less extreme, but the overall quality of the average opponent may be slightly higher. Their division opponents either took strides to improve their rosters or will get their starting QB back from a major injury, and all three rivals should expect growth from their offenses with their quarterbacks all entering Year 2. The Jaguars however, have Trevor Lawrence entering his fourth year as a quarterback who has been very good but not great so far, and they spent the offense upgrading a few positions (center on the O-line, defensive tackle on the D-line) but largely trying to plug holes created by departures at receiver and in the secondary.

Reaching the next level for the Jaguars means Lawrence reaching the next level as a quarterback, as well as new defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen improving the defense after largely successful stops in New Orleans and Atlanta. Accomplish both and the Jaguars may have an edge on the much buzzier Texans team considering how close the division race was last year despite the disparity in their schedules. But neither will prove to be an easy task.
