2023 NFL MVP odds: Award now Lamar Jackson's to lose after former favorite Brock Purdy throws four interceptions in 49ers' loss to Ravens

Lamar Jackson is the new favorite to win NFL MVP.

Someone had very good timing on PropSwap, where you can sell an open futures ticket. A bettor originally placed a $2,000 wager on San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy to win the NFL MVP Award when he was a +1000 favorite, meaning if Purdy won the ticket was worth $202,000. The bettor, however, sold it last week for $125,000, the biggest sale in the site's history. That bettor is sitting pretty, as Purdy imploded Monday night and threw four picks as the Niners were shockingly dominated at home in a 33-19 loss to Baltimore and Lamar Jackson, who is now the consensus MVP favorite.

Purdy finished 18-of-32 for 255 yards with no touchdowns and a career-high four picks against the NFL's No. 1 scoring defense for a passer rating of 42.6, the worst of any start in his career. Purdy's night ended when he departed in the fourth quarter after sustaining a left shoulder stinger. He became the first NFL player to throw three interceptions in the first half of a game this season and the first 49er to do so since Nick Mullens in 2018. Purdy's four-pick outing was the first by a Niners quarterback since Colin Kaepernick did it in 2015.

"It's the NFL," Purdy said. "We have some opportunities coming up, and we still got two games left in the regular season before we get into playoffs. For me, [I'm] trying to look at the big picture of what we're trying to do, what our team goals are. But at the same time, I have to look myself in the mirror and ask myself why or how that happened and why I made those decisions."

After starting Christmas morning at -160 on the NFL MVP odds at FanDuel, Purdy is now a +1300 fourth favorite behind Jackson (-170), Christian McCaffrey (+470) and Tua Tagovailoa (+900). Josh Allen is also +1300. Purdy was -200 at DraftKings but is now +1200 and behind Jackson (-160), McCaffrey (+400) and Tagovailoa (+1000). McCaffrey scored his 21st touchdown of the season in the loss (tied with Miami's Raheem Mostert for the league lead) to go along with 130 all-purpose yards.

San Francisco still controls its destiny to earn the NFC's top seed and as it holds tiebreakers over fellow 11-4 teams Philadelphia and Detroit. The Niners simply need to win at tanking Washington this Sunday and at home vs. the Rams in Week 18 with Los Angeles perhaps playing for a wild card spot. The Niners are -425 favorites to earn the NFC's top seed and are still +100 conference favorites.

Jackson was the unanimous 2019 MVP and would become the 11th player to win the award at least twice. He threw for 252 yards and two scores and rushed for 45 yards on Monday. Those aren't crazy numbers. but he didn't turn the ball over and led the most impressive win by any team this season.

"I thought Lamar had an MVP performance," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "It takes a team to create a performance like that, but it takes a player to play at that level -- to play at an MVP level -- it takes a player to play that way. And Lamar was all over the field doing everything."

Jackson can become the third QB since 1970 to win MVP without a 1,000-yard rusher or 1,000-yard receiver, joining future Hall of Famers Brett Favre in 1996 and John Elway in 1987. The last 22 quarterbacks QBs to win MVP had a teammate with 1,000 rushing yards or 1,000 receiving yards that season. Baltimore has lost top running back J.K. Dobbins and tight end Mark Andrews to season-ending injuries.

This season is shaping up to be a repeat of 2019 in terms of Jackson winning the MVP and the Ravens (12-3) earning the AFC's top seed. They would get it with a win over visiting Miami on Sunday. Baltimore is -330 for the top seed and +200 to win the conference but is still a second favorite (+350) to San Francisco (+225) to win Super Bowl 58.
