2023 NFL last winless team odds: Panthers solid favorites over Bears; November 9 game could send Caleb Williams to Chicago

The NFL is down to its final two winless teams: Chicago and Carolina.

No team in NFL history has gone 0-17 in a regular season (the 17-game schedule hasn't been around long) and it's extremely unlikely to happen this year with only the Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers winless entering Week 5 and still to play each other. DraftKings prices any club to finish 0-17 at +1300. The Panthers are the -175 favorites to be the last team to win a game, but that's simply because the Bears (+140) play on Thursday as 6-point underdogs and could win before the Panthers have a chance to do so. The Panthers are even bigger underdogs (+10) Sunday in Detroit so this prop should be reposted next week.

The Bears are on a franchise-record 14-game losing streak and are +2800 for a 0-17 season after last year's 3-14 mark. If Chicago loses on Thursday, it has two very winnable games up next at home vs. Minnesota and Las Vegas.

If there is one bright spot for Bears fans it's that the team holds its own first-round pick in the 2024 draft and has Carolina's as well, and right now those would be the first two picks in a draft that is believed to be loaded at the top with QB Caleb Williams and WR Marvin Harrison Jr., to name two excellent prospects. Offshore book BetOnline offers odds on whether the Bears will pick first and second (whichever order) with No at -2000 at Yes at +700.

(That same book has Matt Eberflus as the -200 favorite to be the first NFL coach fired, and he might be canned on Friday if the Bears are blown out Thursday.)

Since the expansion Houston Texans were added for the 2001 season, the No. 1 overall selection in the draft has gone to a team that has started 0-3 in 15 of 21 drafts. Chicago and Carolina already are one "better" than that, while previously 0-3 Denver (in Chicago) and 0-3 Minnesota (in Carolina) both won in Week 4.

That the Panthers, who had to give up their 2024 first-round pick as part of the deal with Chicago to move up to No. 1 this year, finish 0-17 is +4000.

They are almost surely not beating the Lions and likely aren't winning in Week 6 in Miami before a bye week. After that are three very winnable games: Home to Houston, home to Indianapolis and at Chicago on a Thursday night (Nov. 9) in what may be the Caleb Williams Bowl of 2024. The Bears surely would be favored there and would be favored on this prop currently, in my opinion, if they didn't play on Thursday in Week 5 and Carolina on Sunday.

If you are wondering, just one 0-4 team has reached the playoffs. Carolina is +1600 to perform a miracle and Chicago is +2500 – the two longest odds as one would expect. Both have updated season win totals of over/under 4.5. Arizona also is at 4.5 but has a victory in hand.

The Panthers and Bears are two of six winless against the spread teams, along with the Broncos, Giants, Bengals and Saints.
