2023 NFL Draft odds: Anthony Richardson now second favorite to be first overall pick after stellar workout at Combine

Anthony Richardson put on a show at the NFL Combine.

On Feb. 24, we wrote that Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson had skyrocketed from a longshot price of +8000 at Caesars Sportsbook to +800 to be the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Richardson was wildly inaccurate as a passer at times with the Gators, but is considered the most athletic QB in this year's class. That was very much on display over the weekend at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, and Richardson is now a +400 second favorite to be the first pick, trailing only Alabama QB Bryce Young (-175).

Richardson said he has called himself "Cam Jackson" because he liked Cam Newton and Lamar Jackson so much, and Richardson looked like a mix of both Saturday. At 6-foot-4, 244 pounds, he set combine all-time records for a quarterback with a vertical jump of 40.5 inches and a broad jump of 10 feet, 9 inches. His 40-yard dash of 4.43 was the best time posted by a quarterback, and Richardson easily was the tallest and heaviest of those measured.

Richardson's 40 time was tied for fourth fastest among quarterbacks at the Combine since 2006, and he is by far the heaviest player in the group. The most notable of the QBs who ran faster was future NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III, who ran a 4.41 at 223 pounds.

At the 2011 NFL Combine, Newton measured 6-foot-5, 248 pounds and ran a 4.60 40-yard dash with a 35-inch vertical to go with a broad jump of 10 feet, 6 inches. Of course, the Panthers took Newton first overall. Jackson, who is considered one of the fastest players in the league, did not run a 40-yard dash for scouts at any point before the 2018 draft. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who has a similar stature (6-4, 237 pounds) to Richardson, ran a 4.75 40 at the 2018 combine.

As for Young, he didn't work out at the combine but will at his pro day on March 23. There were some concerns about Young's size and he officially measured at 5-foot-10 1/8 and weighed 204 pounds at the combine. He would be the lightest Round 1 quarterback since at least 2006 and one of the shortest passers drafted since the AFL-NFL merger in 1967.

At BetMGM, Richardson is up to +300 to be the first player off the board, with Young at -185. No University of Florida player has ever gone first – Newton was in Gainesville for a brief time but never played for the Gators. Ohio State's CJ Stroud had been the +230 second favorite to go first but is now +550. Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter has shot up to +5000 due to his legal issues.

The Chicago Bears hold the No. 1 overall pick but remain +400 to actually make the selection, as they will likely trade the pick to a team in need of a quarterback. Houston (+240), currently picking second, and Indianapolis (+275), slotted fourth, are both favored to pick there via trade.
