2023 NFL Draft odds: Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson rocketing up the board with recent heavy action as No. 1 overall pick

Could Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson actually go first in the 2023 NFL Draft?

The 2023 NFL Draft is about two months away in Kansas City and the Combine starts next week, so the chatter will really start to get intense regarding the first overall pick – currently held by the Bears, but they are widely expected to trade it because they don't need a quarterback. On the CBS Sports Big Board, former Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson is ranked as the No. 19 overall prospect but has taken massive betting action at Caesars Sportsbook of late to jump from +8000 to be the top overall pick to +800.

"I would say a big move even from +8000 to +800 is pretty commonplace for the NFL Draft," said Adam Pullen, Assistant Director of Trading at Caesars Sportsbook. "We're more apt to make huge moves because it's all information based. All it takes is one mock draft to get people excited. We always have to be on guard, we can't take too many chances. We can always raise him up if there was a rogue mock draft and everyone else has him drafted higher."

Some of this movement could be due to a mock draft published by CBS Sports' Chris Trapasso on Wednesday as he had Richardson going first – I've honestly not seen any other major site with that – to Indianapolis via trade with Chicago. No question the Colts need a QB and might have to move up from No. 4 overall to get the one they want.

Here is what Trapasso wrote: "I think Richardson is going to emphatically remove the lid from Lucas Oil Stadium at the NFL Scouting Combine. That will lead to the Colts taking a chance on him, given the hiring of former Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen as head coach. Richardson has similarities to Jalen Hurts and All-Pro upside."

Indeed, Richardson does have Hurts' running skills as he carried 103 times for 654 yards and nine touchdowns for the disappointing Gators in 2022. However, his accuracy is a MAJOR issue as Richardson completed only 53.8% of his passes. Then again, accuracy was a knock on Hurts entering the NFL and a big reason he lasted until Round 2 in 2020. Like Hurts, Richardson is considered high-risk, high-reward. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported this week that some teams only have a fourth-round grade on Richardson but others love him and see the next Cam Newton (who was once at Florida).

"As much as I don't think [Richardson's] going first, we just have to react to the money that's coming in and the current news," Pullen said. "The draft is as volatile as it gets, and the interest around it is only going to increase. Every year, you hear bookmakers say how tough the draft is. People catch on to it, and it's a great betting opportunity for the public."

Tells you the era we are in though, as Richardson wasn't half the QB Tim Tebow was at Florida, yet Richardson is in the No. 1 conversation and Tebow went No. 25 overall in 2010 – and flopped.

Alabama QB Bryce Young is the -125 favorite to go first, followed by Ohio State QB CJ Stroud (+230), Kentucky QB Will Levis (+500), Alabama pass-rusher Will Anderson (+600) and Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter (+600) ahead of Richardson.

We should see a lot more draft props in the coming weeks (there are Combine props), but DraftKings lists Richardson at +600 to be the first QB taken regardless of which sport. It's certainly possible Chicago stays at No. 1 and takes either Anderson or Carter.
