2023 NBA All-Star Game Draft odds: LeBron James favored to select Luka Doncic first overall in new pre-game format

It's not going to be easy to pre-wager on the NBA All-Star Game this year.

Kudos to the NBA for thinking outside the box, but Adam Silver has made wagering on Sunday's All-Star Game in Salt Lake City rather difficult because the rosters of Team LeBron James and Team Giannis Antetokounmpo will not be filled out until shortly before tipoff with the captains' draft starting at 7:30 p.m. ET. DraftKings lists the Mavericks' Luka Doncic as the betting favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick and Team LeBron is a 3-point favorite.

You might be asking how the sportsbooks could possibly list a favorite for Sunday's game. Since this draft format was introduced for the 2018 game, Team LeBron is 5-0, beating Team Steph Curry in 2018, Team Giannis in 2019 & '20, and Team Kevin Durant the past two years.

The captain's spots go to the players who lead their conferences in fan votes and James pretty much always does, so he'll pick first again this year with Antetokonmpo going second and so on. It's not clear whether if Giannis can play, though, after spraining his wrist Thursday. For the past two years, James' first was Antetokounmpo. James' second pick for the past two years (third overall) was Curry, who will miss this year's game an injury. Zion Williamson from the Western Conference and Durant from the East will also be out hurt.

Ja Morant has replaced Curry as a starter and first-time Jazz All-Star Lauri Markkanen is in for Williamson. Joel Embiid was named Durant's replacement ,but Embiid said he isn't sure if he will play due to his own ailment. James and Antetokounmpo will pick from the eight-player starters' pool first and then from the 14 reserves. Antetokounmpo will be picking first among the reserves.

Embiid is the +400 second favorite to be the top pick behind Doncic (+320), and Luka should be favored – he has been drafted by James the past two years. James can't take a Lakers teammate because there isn't one in this game. However, he could take former Cavaliers teammate Kyrie Irving (+425) from Dallas. Boston's Jayson Tatum is also +425.

The remaining options, subject to change: Nikola Jokic (+425), Morant (+800), Donovan Mitchell (+1400) and Markkanen (+5000) – if James wants to curry favor with the local Jazz fans, maybe he does take Markkanen.

Otherwise, All-Star Weekend is pretty much the same. The Celebrity Game and Rising Stars Challenge are both Friday night – 21 NBA rookies and sophomores were drafted among three Rising Stars teams and seven G-League players form the fourth team. It's a single-elimination tournament.

Team Pau Gasol is the +175 favorite in the Rising Stars. Among his players: Orlando's Paolo Banchero, this season's Rookie of the Year favorite, and Toronto's Scottie Barnes, last year's ROY winner. Team Jason Terry, which is the G-League squad, is the +425 long shot. All eyes will be on Scoot Henderson on Team Terry. Henderson is the expected No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

Saturday night is the Skills Challenge, 3-Point Contest and Slam Dunk Contest. Damian Lillard is the +300 favorite in the 3-Point Contest and little-known Mac McClung the -125 leader in the Dunk Contest. It might be the most anonymous group of dunkers in the event's history.
