2023 Heisman Trophy odds: Longhorns' Quinn Ewers taking most Heisman betting action of any player despite Texas QB competition with Arch Manning

Can Quinn Ewers become the first Texas quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy?

Technically, there is a quarterback competition at fall camp for the Texas Longhorns between incumbent starter Quinn Ewers and maybe the most hyped true freshman QB ever in Arch Manning. Realistically, there is not and coach Steve Sarkisian essentially said that following the team's spring game. Bettors at BetMGM clearly don't have any worries about Ewers as the starter, as he's taking more money at the sportsbook to win the 2023 Heisman Trophy than any player in the nation.

During the Orange-White Game in April, the sophomore Ewers completed 16 of 23 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown while Manning, the nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning, was just 5-for-13 for 30 yards. After the spring game, Sarkisian said "It's pretty clear to say that Quinn Ewers will be the Longhorns' starting quarterback. And we feel very good about that."

Ewers too was a highly regarded recruit. Coming out of Southlake Carroll High School in Texas in the Class of 2022, he was ranked as the No. 1 overall player by sister site 247Sports. Ewers originally committed to Ohio State but never saw the field and transferred to Texas. Last year as a redshirt freshman, he started 10 games and completed 172-of-296 passes (58.1%) for 2,177 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions to earn honorable mention Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year honors.

He closed the season strong by throwing for 369 yards and a TD in the Alamo Bowl loss to Washington and finished the season with a streak of 116 consecutive passes without an interception, tied for the eighth-longest streak in program history. If Ewers shines this season and stays healthy, Manning likely will be redshirted and then be UT's starter for its first two seasons in the SEC – where his uncles played. In fact, if Ewers goes down injured, Sarkisian's first choice this year likely will be 2022 backup Maalik Murphy, according to many around the program.

Ewers has +1000 odds to win the Heisman – which no Texas quarterback has ever done – behind USC's Caleb Williams (+500), the 2022 winner, and LSU's Jayden Daniels (+900). Ewers is taking 15% of the handle on that prop, easily the most.

His teammate, junior receiver Xavier Worthy, is taking the second-most money at 12.3% as a +6600 longshot. So maybe this is just a Texas-centric thing, although sports betting is not legal in that state yet. Daniels is third in handle at 10.9%. Manning is +12500 on the 2023 Heisman prop.

Texas is a 35-point home favorite for its season opener vs. Rice and is a +100 favorite to win the Big 12 in its last season as a memeber.
