2023 British Open second-round golf odds, tee times, weather forecast: England's Tommy Fleetwood tied atop leaderboard entering Friday, new favorite to win at Royal Liverpool

Tommy Fleetwood is looking to end a long English drought in the British Open.

No player from England has won the British Open since Nick Faldo did so way back in 1992, although a handful of Brits have come close since then. The first round of the 2023 Open Championship from Royal Liverpool in Hoylake, England, is in the books, and Englishman Tommy Fleetwood is in a three-way tie for the lead at 5-under 66 -- and the new +550 tournament favorite at Caesars Sportsbook.

Thursday was Fleetwood's 11th round of 66 or better at a major championship since 2017, tied for the second-most of any player with Jordan Spieth, who shot a 2-under 69 Thursday and is now +1000 to win. Reigning PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka has the most such rounds of 66 or better in that major span with 14, but shot a 1-under 70 Thursday and is +1800.

The 32-year-old Fleetwood, who opened +3000 to win this week, is on a short list of best active players in the world yet to capture a major. He has been a runner-up a couple of times, including at the 2019 British Open at Royal Portrush when he finished six shots behind winner Shane Lowry. Fleetwood, who was born about 30 miles up the English coast in Southport, has three top-5 finishes at his past six majors overall. He also was T4 at the 2022 British and played well last week at the Scottish Open with a T6.

While Faldo was the last Englishman to win the Claret Jug, that was not on English soil but at Muirfield in Scotland. The last to win on in England was Tony Jacklin in 1969 at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

Fleetwood is tied with South African amateur Christo Lamprecht and Argentina's Emiliano Grillo. In his first British Open, all the 22-year-old Lamprecht did was shoot the second-best score ever by an amateur in the world's oldest tournament. He's now +9000 to win. Tom Lewis shot 65 in Round 1 in 2011 and Matti Schmid the same in Round 2 in 2021. Lamprecht, standing 6 feet, 8 inches, is believed to be the tallest player to ever compete in The Open. Grillo was +30000 to take the Claret Jug but is down to +3000 as he looks for a first major title.

Rory McIlroy was the pre-tournament favorite at +525 to win his second Open Championship – he won the last time it was held at Royal Liverpool in 2014. It was his fourth time as the pre-British favorite, the third-most in the past 40 years behind Tiger Woods (15) and Faldo (5). As of this writing, McIlroy shot even-par 71 and +1000 to win. A total of 50 of the last 52 Open champions have been within five shots of the lead after Round 1. McIlroy had an incredible par save on 18 from a pot bunker to stay within five.

The player who took the most action to win before the tournament began was world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who is playing with Fleetwood and Adam Scott. Scheffler shot a a 1-under 70 and is +650 to win, down from an open of +750. Brian Harman had the best day of any American at 4 under and is +1600 to win his first major and first PGA Tour event since 2017.

The weather forecast for Friday via the BBC: Largely cloudy with isolated showers. A few brighter spells may break through in the cloud at times. Towards the end of the day, outbreaks of rain will arrive from the west. The temperature (high of 61 degrees) and winds (WNW 10-20 mph) should be about the same as Thursday.
