2020 Pittsburgh Pirates Preview: Projected rotation, starting lineup, prospects, win total

SportsLine's John Bollman went 14-1 on his MLB win total bets last season. Here he previews the Pirates and tells you whether to go Over or Under 68.5 wins.

    Pittsburgh Pirates

    2019 record: 69-93

    Record in one-run games: 19-25

O/U win total from Willam Hill: 68.5

Key Additions: Jarrod Dyson, Derek Holland

Key Losses: Starling Marte, Melky Cabrera, Francisco Liriano, Felipe Vasquez (restricted)

The Pirates made offseason headlines with their overhaul of the front office and the decision to trade Starling Marte. Felipe Vasquez won't appear at all during the 2020 season, and they also lost Melky Cabrera. Pittsburgh signed a couple low-risk, high-reward players in Jarrod Dyson and Derek Holland, presumably in hopes they can trade them at the deadline.

    Projected Rotation

    1) Joe Musgrove

    2) Chris Archer

    3) Trevor Williams

    4) Mitch Keller

    5) Steven Brault

This rotation struggled in 2019, but they are willing to risk the tough outings to give their young pitchers experience. Archer, Keller, and Brault seriously struggled at times, although Keller was their top prospect going into the 2019 season. He should improve in his second campaign, but if any of these guys gets hurt, there is little to no depth behind them.

    Fantasy-relevant relievers

Keone Kela (projected 23 saves, 2.88 ERA)

    Major League-ready prospects

    Ke'Bryan Hayes (3B)

    Projected Lineup

    1) Jarrod Dyson

    2) Brian Reynolds

    3) Josh Bell

    4) Gregory Polanco

    5) Colin Moran

    6) Adam Frazier

    7) Kevin Newman

    8) Jacob Stallings

Pittsburgh's lineup looks very bare without Starling Marte, and there is not really much depth at all. However, these players can get hot, and the Pirates always seem to score in bunches. They don't have any depth, and that will be crucial if they have any injuries.

    Key bench players

Cole Tucker, Jason Martin, Jose Osuna
