2020 NFL Draft: Dolphins want No. 1 overall pick but still favored for Tua Tagovailoa
The Miami Dolphins have picked first overall in the NFL Draft once in franchise history. That came in 2008, the year after the Fins went 1-15, and they took Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long. Pretty good pick as Miami made the playoffs in '08 – eight total teams have made the playoffs in the same season in which they made the first overall selection in the draft – and Long would make four Pro Bowls in his career.
Reports out of Miami are that the Fins want to acquire the No. 1 overall pick in this month's draft from the Cincinnati Bengals because Dolphins higher-ups are so enamored with LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner. Then again, Bengals higher-ups love him too.
Now, it obviously takes two teams to trade, and the Bengals could tell the Dolphins to bug off. That said, Miami has more draft capital than any team this year, including picks Nos. 5, 18 (from Pittsburgh) and No. 26 (from Houston) in the first round. Miami owns 14 picks in this year's draft, including six picks in the Top 70. The Fins also have two No. 1s and two No. 2s in 2021.
The last time the No. 1 overall pick was traded was in 2016 when the Los Angeles Rams sent six picks to the Tennessee Titans: two first-round picks ('16 & '17), two second-rounders (both in 2016), and two third-round selections (one in '16 and one in '17). Tennessee also sent back a fourth-rounder and sixth-rounder in 2016. L.A. of course took Cal quarterback Jared Goff, who has been inconsistent but did reach a Super Bowl.
Burrow is such a lock to go first overall that William Hill sportsbook doesn't offer an NFL Draft prop on which player will go first – as opposed to offering which goes second or third. Burrow is a +2000 long shot to go second and +10000 long shot to be the third quarterback off the board overall.
Miami remains the -150 clear-cut favorite to be the team to draft Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who could still be on the board at No. 5 overall due to his injury history. It's highly unlikely that Tua would be the choice at No. 1 overall because of that injury history.Â
