2020 Colorado Rockies Preview: Projected rotation, starting lineup, prospects, win total

SportsLine's John Bollman went 14-1 on his MLB win total bets last season. Here he previews the Rockies and tells you whether to go Over or Under 72 wins.

Colorado Rockies

2019 record: 71-91

Record in one-run games: 22-21

O/U win total from Willam Hill: 72

Key Additions: None

Key Losses: Yonder Alonso

It is not surprising to see the Rockies inactive after the 2019 season. Their starting pitching returned to its typical Coors Field form, and they really struggled after the trade deadline. The Rockies were in the news for shopping around their best player in Nolan Arenado, and they didn't add to their pitching staff which featured a 5.56 ERA, good for second-worst in the league.

Projected Rotation

1) German Marquez

2) Jon Gray

3) Kyle Freeland

4) Antonio Senzatela

5) Chi Chi Gonzalez/Peter Lambert

On paper, this pitching staff really isn't that bad, but add in inconsistency and injury problems, and you have no idea what you're getting. Marquez has flashed, but he always seems to have that one outing that makes you question his ability as an ace.  Freeland is hoping to bounce back after a 2019 downturn in which he spent half the season in the minors. Senzatela and Gonzalez aren't long term options, but Peter Lambert showed his potential.

Fantasy-relevant relievers

Wade Davis (projected 26 saves, 6.14 ERA)

Scott Oberg (projected 11 saves, 3.23 ERA)

Major League-ready prospects

Brendan Rodgers (SS), Colton Welker (1B/3B)

Projected Lineup

1) Charlie Blackmon

2) Trevor Story

3) Nolan Arenado

4) David Dahl

5) Daniel Murphy

6) Ryan McMahon

7) Raimel Tapia

8) Tony Wolters

This is still one of the best 1-2-3 trios in a lineup in the league, and they will produce plenty of runs. The Rockies have the firepower to score plenty of runs, although they do get pretty thin if any of their position players get hurt. Brendan Rodgers will provide some much-needed depth and could still pan out as a superstar.
