Bruce's Past Picks
We suppose that Mike Sullivan is used to extra time lately as it's three overtimes in a row for his Penguins...but hardly sure Pittsburgh gets that far at the Rock tonight. The Devils have bounced back smartly from most recent losses and have the added bonus of Jacob Markstrom in the nets this evening. New Jersey has won in six of Markstrom's last seven starts, and for December, his numbers are not bad (we'll say)...1.33 GAA and .937 saves in six starts. Meanwhile, not sure Tristan Jarry gets as much scoring support in goal as he has in many of his starts, as his 3.62 GAA and .883 saves should be equating to something worse than his deceiving 7-4-2 record. Play Devils on Puck Line
Colorado needed a three-goal rally in the third period to pull out the 4-2 decision last night in San Jose behind Mackenzie Blackwood, and now goes to the second half of the new goalie combo with Scott Wedgewood, recently added from the Preds. Mostly good thus far for Wedgewood in his new uniform, though he was on the wrong end of a 4-1 scoreline vs. Utah in his most-recent start last Thursday. Meanwhile the Ducks have won their last two, including 4-2 vs. the Jets on Wednesday when Frank Vatrano scored twice. After Anthony Stolarz won in goal at midweek, John Gibson gives it a shot tonight after getting his first win in five starts last Saturday vs. Columbus. Play Ducks on Puck Line
Interesting sidebar angles tonight at the Shark Tank as these teams have swapped goalies in recent weeks...Mackenzie Blackwood starts tonight for Colorado, and Alexander Georgiev for San Jose. The Sharks, however, continue in a battling fashion, with each of their last four games decided by exactly one goal. San Jose lost three of those, but the Puck Line often works these days for the Sharks, usually able to scratch out goals, and rookie Macklin Celebrini continues to look worthy of the first draft pick, already with 11 goals. Meanwhile, the Avs are not in particularly good form, having lost two of three, with the offense held to just one goal in each of those losses vs. Vancouver and Utah. Play Sharks on Puck Line
Though the Panthers are off of a wild 6-5 win at Edmonton on Monday, recent form hasn't been all that good, so we don't mind giving the capable Wild a look. Note that Minnesota has dropped back-to-back games just once in the past two months and seems to rally when it's well-liked Marc-Andre Fleury (6-1-1. 2.51 GAA, .909 saves) in goal, as the case in Saturday's win vs. the Flyers, when he stopped 21 of 22 shots. Keep in mind that Florida had been blanked in consecutive games on this road trip before the Oilers contest on Monday, and Paul Maurice's squad has dropped three of its last six outings. We continues to see good defense from the Blues since Jim Montgomery took over behind the bench in later November , which we saw again on Sunday in the 3-2 win over the Rangers. Indeed, St Louis ranks high in almost every defensive metric since Montgomery came aboard, and tonight likely goes back to goalie Jordan Binnington after Joel Hofer won for the fourth straight time on Sunday. Keep in mind that Binnington recently blanked the Devils 3-0 at the Rock on November 27 in his first start for Montgomery. Binnington will have to go some tonight, however, to outduel New Jersey's Jacob Markstrom, who has a 1.39 GAA and .934 saves in five December starts. Play Devils-Blues Under
The Caps remain perhaps the surprise story of the league as Spencer Carbery has the Caps atop the Metropolitan Division. It hasn't mattered that Alex Ovechkin has been out the past four weeks, as center Dylan Strome (37 points) is in the midst of a career season, while goalie work between Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren has also been superb; tonight it's Lindgren, who has been lights-out winning his two starts this month, surrendering only two goals (0.98 GAA) and with .963 saves in wins vs. the Leafs and Blue Jackets. Dallas, however, has surrendered the fewest goals in the league (74), while Lindgren's friend Jake Oettinger has a 2.19 GAA and .910 saves this month in the net for the Stars. Play Caps-Stars Under
This Rangers downturn has lasted too long to be considered a blip, with just three wins in their last twelve, flailing in the trade market, Peter Laviolette looking for answers, and now Jonathan Quick making his first start in goal since being rocked by the Kraken in a 7-5 loss last Sunday. Meanwhile the Blues are on their first losing streak under Jim Montgomery, but nothing wrong with the effort in Saturday's 2-1 OT loss to the Stars. Defensive numbers across the board have improved since Montgomery took over, and worth noting that Joel Hofer (slated in the nets tonight) has won all three starts in goal, saving 71 of 77 shots, since Montgomery came aboard in late November. Play Blues on Money Line
More personnel moves for the Blues, adding Cam Fowler from the Ducks. The defense has already tightened considerably for St Louis since Jim Montgomery took over from Drew Bannister behind the bench; since then, the Blues have a team save percentage that's fourth in the league, and are allowing the eighth lowest high-danger chances. Jordan Binnington is back in goal tonight, though he has allowed four goals in his last two starts. Meanwhile, Jake Oettinger always presents a blockade in the Dallas net, and has been his usual solid self in December, recording a 2.45 GAA in five starts this month. The Stars should be ready to play defense, too, after losing to lowly Nashville on Thursday. Play Blues-Stars Under
The trendline we're watching tonight in Raleigh is the current four-game run (under 3-0-1) by visiting Ottawa, which has been getting some superb work in goal lately. Linus Ullmark is in the nets again tonight after allowing just one goal in each of his last three starts (all Sens wins), stopping 86 of 89 shots in the process. The first meeting between these sides back on November 16 was another handy under in a 4-0 Carolina win at this same Lenovo Center, when it was Spencer Martin authoring a shutout in the nets for the Canes. Pyotr Kochetkov, who got the Tuesday win over San Jose, is scheduled back in goal for Carolina tonight. Play Senators-Hurricanes Under
The Oilers did just sweep three on their homestand, but have lost three of their last four on the road. The Wild has been playing pretty well lately, too, winning six of seven, including three straight in St. Paul. Work in goal continues to be strong, with Filip Gustavsson back in the nets tonight after posting some great marks to date (14-4-4, 2.08 GAA, .927 saves). His Wild mates are also going to be shooting at Cal Pickard, bit Stuart Skinner, in the Edmonton goal. Perhaps the fact the Wild peppered Start Skinner, who only saved 21 of 26 shots, in a 5-3 Minnesota win on November 21, has something to do with Kris Knoblauch's choice in goal tonight. Play Wild on Money Line
Recent form of the Pens hasn't been too bad though consensus opinion seems to suggest the Penguins are a subpar outfit, and that even a broken clock is right twice per day. We saw a pretty weak statement on Monday in a 6-2 loss to the Avs at PPG Paints Arena. It was another tough night for goalie Tristan Jarry, who saved only 21 of 25 shots, and it's worth noting he has allowed four or more goals three times in his last five starts. Montreal's recent form isn't that bad, winning three of four, and Sam Montembeault on the upswing in goal, stopping 117 of 124 shots across that four-game span. Play Canadiens on Money Line
The Rangers' puzzling downturn continued in Monday's loss to the Blackhawks. That makes eight losses in ten as Peter Laviolette cannot seem to find the answers; the offense stalled in the 2-1 loss, but the Monday result was not the fault of Igor Shesterkin, who has been good enough in goal since signing his contract extension last week, surrendering only 2 vs. both the Penguins and Sabres. At the moment, Buffalo doesn't offer much more to recommend than New York, as the Sabres are now winless in their seven, and goalie Ukko Pekka Luukkonen is struggling (4.27 GAA in December). UPL, however, did shut down the Rangers in a 6-1 win back on November 7, stopping 25 of 26 shots. Play Rangers-Sabres Under
Other than Santa later this month, the biggest December arrival for the Canucks would be Thatcher Demko returning to active duty in goal. Which happens tonight as Demko makes his first appearance of the season for Rick Tocchet's side. But such returns don't always go smoothly and worth noting the losses in three of the last four at home in Rogers Arena for Vancouver. Meanwhile, the Blues have shown some life since Jim Montgomery came in to replace Drew Bannister behind the bench, as St Louis has won four of six since. Note Blues goalie Joel Hofer is 2-0 since the switch to Montgomery, posting a 1.50 GAA and saving 49 of 52 shots on goal. Play Blues on Money Line
Call us a tad surprised that Utah is being made a slight favorite here. After all, the Hockey Club just won its first back-to-back games since the opening week of the season And Utah goals have mostly been in short supply since late October. Speaking of streaks, the Wild had recently won five in a row until getting spilled by the Kings on the weekend. There is a lot to like about Minnesota, which is tied for the most points (40) in the league and is also 11-2-3 on the road this season. Filip Gustavsson usually provides an edge when in goal for the Wild, too, considering his 1.99 GAA and .931 saves this season. Play Wild on Money Line
Anders Sorensen's first game in charge of the Blackhawks on vs. Winnipeg looked much the same, if not a bit worse, than the way things were under Luke Richardson. The result was familiar, a 4-2 loss; so much for any new coach "bounce" for Chicago. More alarming was only1 4 shots on goal, a season low. Not good! The Rangers have had a bumpy go lately, too, and were embarrassed 7-5 at home on Sunday by the Kraken, Jonathan Quick's magic in goal completely disappeared on Sunday, and now the many millions of dollars richer Igor Shesterkin, just off of a contract extension and a 4-2 win over the Penguins on Friday, looks to set things straight at MSG.
