Georgia Southern vs. Coastal Carolina Week 5 college football odds: Total has dropped more than 10 points due to Hurricane Ian
The remnants of Hurricane Ian are likely to impact several college football games in the southeastern United States on Saturday. As of now, the Sun Belt matchup between Georgia Southern and unbeaten Coastal Carolina from Myrtle Beach, S.C., on Saturday afternoon is a go, but the total has plummeted from an open of 68.5 points at Caesars Sportsbook to 58 because of the storm.
"It looks like that the Carolinas and Virginia will be impacted the most on Saturday by Hurricane Ian," said Joey Feazel, lead college football trader at Caesars Sportsbook. "With Georgia Southern-Coastal, they've been hammering Georgia Southern Overs recently. But that tempo and passing game, if that's your gameplan, rain and wind don't mix with that. With those bigger totals, [people betting this Under] really has to do with playing style and whether they like to throw the ball or not, because how this weather affects them most is the passing game."
According to Coastal Carolina's game notes, playing in the rain won't be very new in this series. In each of the last two games at Georgia Southern in 2019 and 2021, torrential rain poured from start to finish in Statesboro.
Georgia Southern is a good offensive team. The Eagles are averaging 39.8 points per game and scored 45 at Nebraska a few weeks ago in a big upset, which proved to be the final game of the Scott Frost era in Lincoln. Georgia Southern, coached by former USC coach Clay Helton, is 10th in the FBS and tops in the Sun Belt with an average of 509.5 yards of offense per game. The Eagles are averaging 322.5 passing yards per game (15th in FBS) and 187.0 rushing yards (42nd in FBS).
Quarterback Kyle Vantrease, a transfer from Buffalo, is already ninth on the school's single-season passing list with 1,290 yards through four games. The record is 1,852 set by Antonio Henton in 2008.
Coastal Carolina, which is 26-3 since the start of 2020, is putting up 37.0 PPG behind the likely Sun Belt Player of the Year, quarterback Grayson McCall. He has thrown at least one touchdown in 17 consecutive games, which is a school record. He enters the game having thrown two or more touchdowns in each of his last five games and seven of his last eight games.
McCall is coming off back-to-back Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year honors (2020 and 2021). McCall, who is in his fourth year overall at Coastal and his third year as the starter, has never played against Georgia Southern, having missed each of the last two meetings due to various injuries. Last year, the Chanticleers won 28-8 at Georgia Southern.
Defensively, both teams are allowing more than 26 points per game.
