NFL Week 3: Josh Rosen named starting quarterback for Miami Dolphins

The UCLA product gets his chance under center as the free-falling Dolphins bench journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Josh Rosen has been named the starting quarterback of the Miami Dolphins for their Sunday game against the Dallas Cowboys, according to several media reports. The NFL Network is being credited as first reporting that the second-year UCLA product will be under center for the Dolphins, whose rampant tanking could lead to a slew of futility milestones.

Veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick was acquired to be a stop-gap measure in the offseason for a team that would surely still be in the quarterback market in the 2020 draft, but one that some observers believed had enough talent to possibly compete for a playoff berth.

But, apparently taking a nod from Raiders coach Jon Gruden, who ignited a complete overhaul of the Raiders last year, the Dolphins decided their best course of action was a fire sale of all their viable assets. The exodus started with the trade of former quarterback Ryan Tannehill in March, followed by the trades of receiver Kenny Stills and guard Laremy Tunstill just before Week 1. The fire sale closed with the recent trade of safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, because the Dolphins are now bereft of any players with market value.

The 22-year-old Rosen was taken No. 10 overall by the Arizona Cardinals last year. He threw for 2,278 yards, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while starting 13 games. Arizona decided to move on after one season and traded him to Miami in order to make way for top overall draft pick Kyler Murray of Oklahoma.

The journeyman Fitzpatrick went 25-for-50 for 274 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions as the Dolphins were outscored 102-10 by the Ravens and Patriots in their first two games.

The Dolphins are three-touchdown underdogs at Dallas, which is among the steepest point spreads ever seen in a regular-season game. This is apparently the weekend for mismatches, as the Jets also are 23.5-point underdogs at the New England Patriots.
