Cam Newton odds to Seahawks: Seattle prefers Geno Smith to former NFL MVP!?

Former NFL MVP Cam Newton remains a free agent, and it now appears Seattle is no longer a possibility for him.

On the most recent NFL odds for where former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton might land, the Seattle Seahawks were the +450 second-favorites on the moneyline behind New England. However, those Seahawks odds have lengthened considerably in the wake of the team re-signing Geno Smith to back up Russell Wilson.

In what world is Geno Smith a better option than Cam Newton? Perhaps Newton's asking price is too high? Or perhaps the Seahawks think that Wilson is invincible? He hasn't missed a game during his eight-year career and has taken every single offensive snap for three years running.

Smith beat out former Denver Broncos first-round pick Paxton Lynch for the backup job a year ago, although Smith was temporarily released before being re-signed. Smith did play pretty well in the 2019 preseason, completing 18 of 34 passes for 282 yards with two touchdowns and no picks. He last took a regular-season snap in 2018 with the Chargers.

Smith's most recent start was somewhat memorable with the Giants because then-New York coach Ben McAdoo benched Eli Manning late in the 2017 season to end his consecutive games streak at 210. The New York media went nuts. The Giants lost Smith's outing to the Raiders and Eli was back as the starter the following week.

Seattle also signed undrafted rookie free agent QB Anthony Gordon following the 2020 draft. He put up crazy good numbers (71.6 percent completions, 5,579 yards, 48 TDs) in Mike Leach's Air Raid offense last year at Washington State. Reasonable chance he wins the No. 2 job over Smith, although Pete Carroll tends to like veteran No. 2s.
