2020 NFL Draft: Surprise! Packers trade up to pick Utah State quarterback Jordan Love 26th

The Green Bay Packers had several pressing needs entering Round 1 of the 2020 NFL Draft on Thursday night. Quarterback obviously wasn't one of them with all-time great Aaron Rodgers under center and still in his prime at age 36. Yet the Packers traded their first-round pick, No. 30 overall, and a fourth-rounder to Miami to move up to No. 26 and take raw but talented Utah State quarterback Jordan Love.

We actually wrote about the fact the Packers seemed enamored with Love back in early April. We noted then that Brett Favre was 36 years old – like Rodgers is – when the Packers took Rodgers at No. 24 overall in the 2005 draft. Rodgers didn't play until 2008.

Early on Tuesday on the Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers said this: "We haven't picked a skill player in the first round in 15 years, so that would be kind of cool." Rodgers likely won't be thrilled with this pick since it won't help the Packers this year.

Love has the prototypical size at 6-foot-4, 225 pounds and a huge arm. But he isn't all that mobile and his decision-making has been questioned after leading the FBS with 17 interceptions last year. Love was much better for Utah State in 2018.

The only other quarterback in the Common Draft Era to lead FBS in interceptions in his final season and get drafted in the first round was a guy named Dan Marino (23 picks as a senior at Pitt). That worked out pretty well.

The CBS Sports Big Board liked Love, ranking him the No. 19 overall player and one spot ahead of Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert, who went No. 6 overall to the Los Angeles Chargers. Needless to say, Love isn't going to be playing in 2020 barring injury to Rodgers. Thus, the SportsLine Projection Model didn't change the Packers' win projections.

Love had an Over/Under draft position of 19.5 at William Hill, with heavy action on the Over so that was a winner for bettors. Love is just the second USU quarterback to ever go in the first round, joining Bill Munson, who went No. 7 overall to the Los Angeles Rams in 1964.
