2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year odds: Bucs tight end Rob Gronkowski

Any football player would love to win an NFL MVP Award twice in his career or Offensive/Defensive Player of the Year, etc. It's not quite as glamorous winning Comeback Player of the Year twice because that would mean said player had two terrible or injury-ravaged seasons as well. New Tampa Bay Bucs tight end Rob Gronkowski is a +300 moneyline favorite at William Hill sportsbook to win a second this season.

NFL Comeback Player of the Year has been given out by the Associated Press since only 1998. The lone two-time winner is quarterback Chad Pennington. He took it home in 2006 with the New York Jets after being limited to three game the year before. Pennington was simply not very good in 2007 with New York but won the award again in 2008 with the Miami Dolphins. He led the Fins to the AFC East title – the last time the Patriots didn't win it.

Gronkowski, traded to the Bucs on April 21 from New England for a 2020 fourth-round pick, was the 2014 winner of Comeback Player of the Year with the Patriots. The year before, he missed training camp and the first six games of the season with a forearm injury and then tore his ACL in Week 14 against the Cleveland Browns. He played a career-low seven games and had 30 catches for 592 yards and four scores.

In 2014, Gronk had one of his best seasons in catching 82 passes for 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns. Of course, Gronk was retired last year but came out of that to play with buddy Tom Brady in Tampa in 2020. No Buccaneer has ever won Comeback Player of the Year, and Gronk is the only tight end to win it.

It could be tough for Gronkowski to win again as the Brady has ton of weapons to throw to, including wideouts Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, and tight ends OJ Howard and Cameron Brate (one could still be traded).

Gronkowski made some news last weekend at the draft when during a televised after-party he said that he had the Bucs' playbook "four weeks ago, and I wasn't even on the team." That would have been an NFL violation. On Wednesday, Gronk posted on Twitter that the comment was in jest.
