Week 2 college football odds, opening line report: Kayvon Thibodeaux injury looms large over Oregon vs. Ohio State

Because there is a college football game tonight on the Labor Day holiday, we won't have updated polls on Monday as we normally would (Tuesday), but the Week 2 odds have been released and No. 4 Ohio State has opened as a 14-point home favorite at Caesars Sportsbook over No. 11 Oregon – again, those rankings may change. The big question there is the status of Ducks superstar defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux.

Thibodeaux could be the first pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and is priced +450 to go there, behind Oklahoma QB Spencer Rattler (+225) and North Carolina QB Sam Howell (+300) – neither of whom looked great in their season debuts. Oregon beat a very good Fresno State team 31-24 despite Thibodeaux leaving in the first half with a left ankle sprain (X-rays were negative). He still managed a sack and forced fumble.

"Kayvon's injury certainly was something that you don't ever want to see for anybody," Coach Mario Cristobal said. "It hurts us considerably playing on the edge."

It's too early to know if Thibodeaux will play against the Buckeyes; he was wearing a walking boot in the second half Saturday. You know he'll want to play in such a high-profile game, but he also doesn't want to risk his health with several millions of dollars at stake. For what it's worth, Ohio State did not allow a sack in its season-opening 45-31 victory at Minnesota last Thursday.

On some lookahead lines, OSU was -11.5 over Oregon and that it grew as much as three points at some points no doubt is due to Thibodeaux/how average the Ducks looked. The Buckeyes are 9-0 all-time vs. Oregon with the last meeting in the inaugural College Football Playoff title game in January 2015.

It appears the only other lock all-Top 25 matchup in Week 2 will be No. 18 Iowa at No. 7 Iowa State – again, rankings may change but neither will fall out. ESPN's College GameDay is headed to Ames for one of the biggest Cy-Hawk matchups ever.

Iowa looked spectacular in Week 1 with a 34-6 home trouncing of No. 17 Indiana. It's safe to say that Iowa cornerback Riley Moss will win most National Defensive Player of the Week awards as he returned two interceptions for touchdowns. The Hawkeyes, who are now on a seven-game winning streak, allowed just 233 yards.

Iowa State perhaps was caught looking ahead to this game as squeaked by FCS school Northern Iowa 16-10 on Saturday. ISU has now won six straight at home, tying for the fourth-best streak in school history. ISU is a 3.5-point favorite at Caesars Sportsbook for this game.

Iowa holds a 45-22 series advantage all-time vs. Iowa State and won the last meeting in 2019 by the unusual score of 18-17. There were two weather delays.

No Thursday games this week, probably because of the NFL Kickoff Game between the Cowboys and Bucs that night.
