Super Bowl 55 coin toss odds, props: Tails has been smart bet over heads in recent years
Tails has been on a winning run of late regarding the Super Bowl coin toss.
One of the most popular bets before any Super Bowl is on the coin toss. Even newbie bettors understand how a coin toss works, and it's a true 50/50 proposition. More experienced bettors like to wager the coin toss to potentially give their bankroll a boost/build momentum before the game kicks off. For Super Bowl 55 on Feb. 7 from Tampa between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, both heads and tails are -101 on the moneyline to be the winning side and both the Chiefs and Bucs also are -101 to win it at William Hill Sportsbook.
In all NFL games, the road team calls the coin toss, and in Super Bowl 55 that's Kansas City – it's irrelevant the game is on the Bucs' home field; the conferences rotate as the home team each Super Bowl. Last year in Miami, the San Francisco 49ers were the road team and won the coin toss by calling tails. The Niners deferred as most NFL teams who win the coin toss do nowadays. Kansas City would go three and out on the opening drive but of course rallied to win the game 31-20.
Tails has been the winning coin toss in two straight and six of the past seven Super Bowls. Rather interestingly, the team that won the coin toss hasn't won the Super Bowl since SB 48 when the Seattle Seahawks destroyed the Denver Broncos 43-8. You may remember the Seahawks deferred then and it worked out amazingly well as the Seattle was awarded a safety on the first offensive play on a bad Broncos snap into their own end zone. At just 12 seconds in, it was the quickest first score in Super Bowl history.
Overall, tails has been the winning coin toss 29 times and heads 25. The winner of the Super Bowl has won the coin toss 24 times. The longest heads winning streak is five and the longest tails is four. The NFC has won the coin toss six of the past seven Super Bowls.
In Week 12 when the Chiefs won in Tampa 27-24, the Bucs won the coin toss and deferred. Kansas City would get a field goal on that first drive.
