Raiders receiver Henry Ruggs to be charged with DUI resulting in death after fatal crash, according to police

Raiders leading receiver Henry Ruggs was involved in a serious car accident early this morning in Las Vegas and will be charged with DUI resulting in death for his role in the incident, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Ruggs did not suffer life-threatening injuries, per the police statement. 

Ruggs' immediate football future is up in the air as the Raiders prepare to play the New York Giants in MetLife Stadium on Sunday. The Raiders were on the bye last week and set to return to practice Wednesday.

The 22-year-old Ruggs was in the wreck in the central Las Vegas Valley area around 3:40 a.m. local time, according to the police statement of the incident:

"On Nov. 2, at approximately 3:39 a.m., the LVMPD responded to a traffic collision near the intersection of South Rainbow Boulevard and South Spring Valley Parkway, involving a Chevrolet Corvette and a Toyota Rav4. Responding officers located the Toyota on fire. Fire department personnel responded and located a deceased victim inside the Toyota. The preliminary investigation indicates the front of the Chevrolet collided with the rear of the Toyota.

"The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as 22-year-old Henry Ruggs III, remained on scene and showed signs of impairment. He was transported to UMC hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Ruggs will be charged with DUI resulting in death."

The charge for DUI causing substantial bodily harm or death is a category B felony in Nevada and is punishable for between 2-20 years in prison. Ruggs' attorneys, David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld, told TMZ: "On behalf of our client Henry Ruggs III we are conducting our own investigation as of this writing and ask everyone to reserve judgment until all the facts are gathered."

Ruggs was the first receiver taken in the 2021 NFL Draft, No. 12 overall out of Alabama. He caught 26 passes for 452 yards and two scores in a moderately disappointing rookie season but was on pace to perhaps double those numbers in 2021 with 24 catches for 469 yards and two TDs in seven games.

Hunter Renfrow and Bryan Edwards are the other Raiders' starting receivers, while Zay Jones is listed as the No. 2 behind Ruggs on the Las Vegas depth chart. The team is quite thin at that position as the trade deadline nears on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.
