Nick Sirianni 2024 NFL coaching odds: Philadelphia Eagles' collapse has coach on hot seat despite three straight playoff appearances
Would the Philadelphia Eagles actually fire Coach Nick Sirianni?
On paper, the thought of the Philadelphia Eagles firing head coach Nick Sirianni is laughable. He's led the team to a 34-17 regular-season record and three straight playoff appearances, losing last February's Super Bowl in a thriller against Kansas City. Philly was once the favorite to win this season's Super Bowl 58 after getting off to a 10-1 start, but it closed with just one victory in its final seven games – including a lopsided 32-9 loss in Tampa on Monday night in the Wild Card round, which the Eagles entered as 3-point favorites. Sirianni's future is a hot topic today and SportsLine offers odds on his future.
FOX Sports' Jay Glazer had reported that Sirianni wasn't on the hot seat, but that was before Monday's ugly effort. The Eagles managed just 276 yards and 13 first downs. Philadelphia was 0-for-11 on third down and fourth down combined, becoming the first team since 1988 to not convert on those downs in a playoff game. The nine points were the team's fewest since Week 7 of the 2021 season against the Giants.
Sirianni didn't exactly get a ringing endorsement afterward from quarterback Jalen Hurts when asked if he wanted the coach back: "I didn't know he was going anywhere." Told that there has been rampant speculation that Sirianni's job was in jeopardy, Hurts said, "I didn't know that." Finally, when asked whether he had confidence in him to fix the Eagles' late season free fall, Hurts said: "I have a ton of confidence in everyone in this building."
The defense has been such a problem all season that Sirianni "benched" coordinator Sean Desai in favor of Matt Patricia as the playcaller late in the season -- and nothing changed. That Sirianni lost both coordinators from last season's team was clearly a major factor in this year's disappointment. Philly became just the second team in NFL history to start a season 10-1 or better and finish with seven losses, joining the 1986 Jets.
There have also been some reports of locker-room discord and one of the team's top leaders, All-Pro center Jason Kelce, reportedly told teammates after Monday's loss that he was retiring. Kelce has spent his entire 13-year career with the Eagles and is one of only five centers in NFL history with at least six All-Pro selections. He was set to become a free agent in March.
"I'm not thinking about that," Sirianni said when asked about his job status following Monday's loss. "I'm thinking about the guys. All the guys in that locker room, every single one of them, they put their heart and soul into this. I'm not worried about me. As the head coach, I'm just trying to be there for our guys and our staff right now through a tough time."
This is a rare offseason, perhaps, where the Eagles could potentially upgrade on Sirianni because Bill Belichick is available – although the division-rival Dallas Cowboys might also covet him. Offshore book BetOnline lists former Titans coach Mike Vrabel as the -150 favorite to be the next Philly coach if Sirianni loses the job. Belichick is next at +400 (with Texans OC Bobby Slowik). Jim Harbaugh is +900. Pete Carroll is +2500.
The site also has a prop on the first coach to leave his current team by Week 1 of 2024 with the Cowboys' Mike McCarthy at -350 and Sirianni at +225.
