Former Wake Forest star Greg Dortch in 'prime position' to make New York Jets roster
Despite an undrafted pedigree, Dortch is reportedly standing out.
Greg Dortch was a dominant player for Wake Forest over a two-season sample and, with that in mind, it was surprising when he was not selected in the 2019 NFL Draft. Dortch does battle size concerns after measuring at just over 5'7 at the draft combine but, if his performance to this point is any indication, the explosive wide receiver could have an inside track toward making the 53-man roster for the New York Jets.
Connor Hughes of The Athletic brings word that Dortch already "turned some heads" and, considering his appeal as a potential option in the return game, he indicates that Dortch is in "prime position" to break camp with the team.
In just 20 college games over two seasons, Dortch caught 142 passes for 1,800 yards (cracking the 1,000 yard barrier as a sophomore in 2018) and 17 touchdowns, averaging 12.7 yards per reception and generally terrifying opponents. Beyond that, he was dynamic as a returner with the ball in his hands, generating two touchdowns on special teams during the 2018 season and averaging an impressive 11.0 yards per punt return.
It should be noted that do have some solid receiving options, headlined by Quincy Enunwa, Robby Anderson and Jamison Crowder. Still, Dortch could bring a fun element in the slot and, according to this reporting, a substantial part of his appeal from a roster standpoint could stem from his special teams ability.
The Jets don't begin training camp until late July and the team is facing 80-1 odds to win the Super Bowl, even after some high-profile additions during the off-season. It seems as though Dortch could provide a spark, though, and his impressive pedigree and tape should combine to create an intriguing storyline for the summer in New York.
