Padres vs. Rockies Wednesday MLB probable pitchers, odds: over-under total of 14 runs highest of 2021 baseball season
There's a massive betting Over/Under total in the Padres at Rockies matinee.
The San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies close out their NL West series with a matinee at Coors Field and the Rockies, who are phenomenal at home yet truly horrific on the road, looking for the sweep. However, the big story here is a massive Over/Under total of 14 runs, which is the highest of the 2021 season and it's doubtful we see one higher. Both clubs are starting bad fill-in pitchers. The first five inning total of Over/Under 8 might be the highest in history.
Two other Rockies home games saw a total as high as 13 this year: Monday it finished Under as Colorado beat San Diego 6-5; and July 2 it also finished Under as Colorado lost to St. Louis 9-3. The Under is 15-5 in the Rockies' past 20 at home overall. The winds are blowing right to left today at maybe 5 mph so shouldn't be a factor.
It's the Padres debut of former NL Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta. The right-hander is a million miles from that guy as he was 5-11 with a 6.88 ERA with the Cubs before being released last week. From May 19 until his release, Arrieta's ERA was 9.00. In his final Chicago start, he was bombed for eight runs and 11 hits in just four innings. The Padres needed rotation help with Yu Darvish, who ironically was acquired from the Cubs in the offseason, on the injured list as are other starting pitchers Chris Paddack and Dinelson Lamet.
Arrieta did pitch in Coors Field in his second-to-last Cubs outing, allowing four runs and nine hits over four innings. Trevor Story, Connor Joe and Sam Hilliard all homered off him.
Austin Gomber was set to pitch for the Rockies but was placed on the paternity list Tuesday and replaced here by Chi Chi Gonzalez, who will be activated off the COVID list. The right-hander is 3-6 with a 6.06 ERA. Gonzalez is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in 12 innings this year vs. San Diego and 2-1 in nine appearances at home this season (six starts) with a 5.36 ERA
Today is the final meeting of the season between the Padres and Rockies, with Colorado guaranteed the season series up 10-8 and having won six in a row vs. San Diego at Coors Field, the longest single-season home winning streak against the Padres in franchise history. The Rockies have won six straight at home overall and are now 40-21 at home on the season. That's a better than 100-win pace over a full season.
