The Jets fell below the .500 mark for the first time since the 1967 opener and suffered their second consecutive defeat as John Hadl and Joe Namath hooked up in a passing duel. Hadl regained his ailing throwing arm and tossed for three touchdowns (2 to Gary Garrison, 1 to Lance Alworth) as he took the Chargers to a 17 point lead and then held on as a late Jets' rally fell short when Joe Namath's pass for Bill Mathis was off line. Hadl passed for 281 yards, while Namath tied a jet record with 29 completions in 51 attempts for 344 yards and two TDs (to George Sauer). Matt Snell, playing with the flu, got only 11 yards as the jet rushing attack ground out a total of 81 yards to San Diego's 150. Jets offense was inconsistent, converting only 2 of 11 third down situations and none until the second half.

NEW YORK 23, BOSTON 14 — At Boston College Stadium, record SRO attendance, 25,584, clear & cool. A three man rush line and four linebacker setup by the Patriots gave the Jets their troubles, but not enough to prevent them from breaking out of the doldrums and hanging up a satisfying victory. Three Jim Turner field goals (16, 24, 13), a TD pass by Joe Namath and a 5 yard scramble by Namath for another score accounted for the Jets points as Weeb Ewbank and his charges defeated former Jet aide Clive Rush in the first meeting between the two. Confronted with the different defense, the Jets turned to their running game, rolling up 164 yards on the ground. Namath added 15 of 21 passes for another 145 yards.
