Trophy roundup: Miami's Morgan wins Nagurski award

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Miami linebacker Dan Morgan won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy on Monday night as the nation's top defensive player.

The award is given annually by the Charlotte Touchdown Club and the Football Writers Association of America.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Morgan helped lead the Hurricanes to a 10-1 season and a Sugar Bowl berth. Morgan holds the school record for career tackles with 507 and is the only player in school history to record more than 100 tackles in four consecutive seasons.

Morgan finished the regular season with 123 tackles, three sacks, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

The other finalists for the Nagurski Trophy were North Carolina State linebacker Levar Fisher, Missouri defensive end Justin Smith, Tennessee defensive tackle John Henderson and California defensive end Andre Carter.

Purdue's Stratton wins tight end award

INDIANAPOLIS -- Purdue tight end Tim Stratton was selected the inaugural John Mackey Award winner Monday.

The award, which is named for the first tight end inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame, is presented to the top tight end in the nation.

Stratton, a junior, had 56 receptions, 579 yards and two touchdowns this season and was a first-team All-Big Ten selection. He ranks No. 8 on the career receiving list at Purdue with 143 receptions and is ninth on the touchdown reception list with 13.

The other finalists were North Carolina's Alge Crumpler and Arizona State's Todd Heap to win the award.
