Grizzlies report: Getting inside
The Grizzlies have signed their two draft choices and are putting them to work. O.J. Mayo, the No. 3 overall pick in the draft, traded to the Grizzlies on draft night, made a smooth, but winded debut in his first Memphis workout July 8. He's getting a crash course, since the Grizzlies started competing on Friday in the NBA Summer League with a 12-man roster that includes Mayo and late first-round draft pick Darrell Arthur. "Today was my first time going up and down (the court in 5-on-5 action) in about two months," Mayo said July 8. "I was kind of winded. But I'll get it together. I want to take it day by day and get better each day. I want to get better at everything." Mayo's shooting has been on target, but he needs work on his entry passes and ball-handling decisions. And for a guy who just arrived, he was surprising vocal. In his summer league debut, he scored 15 points and added five assists on July 11. It appeared that Mayo doesn't mind playing the 2-guard with second-year standout Mike Conley handling the point. "I can shoot the ball pretty well, and at the same time, I can create my own shot," Mayo said. "We have a great point guard in Mike, so I just want to do what fits best in the system." Conley likes playing beside Mayo. "But he didn't come in trying to act like he's the man, he came in willing to learn," Conley said. "When you see that in a guy with the hype he has, you can't teach that stuff." Copyright (C) 2008 The Sports Xchange. All Rights Reserved. |
