It shouldn't be much of a surprise that Olie Kolzig confirmed in Friday's Washington Post article that he won't be coming back next season.

Coach Bruce Boudreau basically sat him for the final six weeks of the season after a poor performance in a 5-0 loss to Chicago in mid-March. Kolzig didn't play a game in the seven-game playoff series with Philadelphia.

But it does leave some questions. There's no question that Kolzig was hurt by his treatment, which is understandable after being associated with a franchise for about 19 years and then thrown to the bench. Could it have been handled a different way?

And now who will be in goal? Backup Brent Johnson, who was relegated to No. 3 after the Cristobal Huet trade and never played again after the deal, is the only signed goalie on the team now. Will they have enough faith him Johnson to make him the backup?

And what about Huet? His agent said earlier this week that he loved his time in Washington. The question is whether the two sides can agree on some kind of contract.

The Caps don't always like to open their checkbooks, but they'd be foolish not to re-sign him. Huet gives the Caps something a bit different in goal, a keeper who's flexible, good with his stick and fits the forechecking first style that Boudreau likes to use. Let's see what happens.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT
That's easy -- it was the night the Caps sealed the Southeast Division title by winning the final game of the season, at home against Florida, 3-1. The Caps simply had to win it -- and they did, capping a seven-game winning streak that carried them to the playoffs. After spending so much of the season near the bottom of the standings, here they were in the playoffs by winning the division. It was an amazing turnaround.

TURNING POINT
The Caps came in on a true high from edging out Carolina to win the division, but they didn't quite have the intensity for the playoffs. The Flyers took them to school a little, and even though the Caps rallied from a 3-1 deficit to force Game 7, they used up a lot of energy to get to that point.

NHL.com just posted the 2008-2009 schedules.  After a quick glance at ours, I've noticed a couple things:

1) No home games vs. Philly or Pittsburgh until 2009 (a bit of a downer, for booing purposes anyway) ... then again, there's always Cristobal Boo-et coming to town for our home opener!

2) Our last 13 games are all against non-playoff qualifiers from this past se ...(more)

1 year 725,000.  Not quite sure how he will fit in with our depth up the middle, but maybe a good trade package.
