Capitals report: Inside shots
It shouldn't be much of a surprise that Olie Kolzig confirmed in Friday's Washington Post article that he won't be coming back next season. Coach Bruce Boudreau basically sat him for the final six weeks of the season after a poor performance in a 5-0 loss to Chicago in mid-March. Kolzig didn't play a game in the seven-game playoff series with Philadelphia. But it does leave some questions. There's no question that Kolzig was hurt by his treatment, which is understandable after being associated with a franchise for about 19 years and then thrown to the bench. Could it have been handled a different way? And now who will be in goal? Backup Brent Johnson, who was relegated to No. 3 after the Cristobal Huet trade and never played again after the deal, is the only signed goalie on the team now. Will they have enough faith him Johnson to make him the backup? And what about Huet? His agent said earlier this week that he loved his time in Washington. The question is whether the two sides can agree on some kind of contract. The Caps don't always like to open their checkbooks, but they'd be foolish not to re-sign him. Huet gives the Caps something a bit different in goal, a keeper who's flexible, good with his stick and fits the forechecking first style that Boudreau likes to use. Let's see what happens.
