They're searching for a defenseman. Maybe two. But even if things stay the way they are, Lou Lamoriello likes what he has and sees a very tough roster for young guys to crack when the new season opens.

"I think we've got a pretty good roster, so somebody's going to have to come in here and really (force his way onto the roster)," the Devils chief said. "We're very happy now with our roster. People forget -- we had 99 points and were in first place 60, 70 percent of the year. We've added two players in Bobby Holik and Brian Rolston, and certainly we're looking for a defenseman or two to come in and play -- or push somebody -- and we'll see what happens from there."

Lamoriello feels the club addressed one major need with Rolston -- offense and a quarterback for the power play. Rolston, who has played center and wing, will apparently play center and Lamoriello said he just might end up with Patrik Elias as his left wing.

Holik is slated to play some eight minutes per game, provide leadership and win some big faceoffs.

In the weeks since the first-day signings of Rolston and Holik, the Devils have added some spare parts, gone through their development camp, which included the newly signed Fedor Federov, and learned Larry Robinson will not return as an assistant coach. They also officially said goodbye to old friend Sergei Brylin, who signed a three-year deal to play in his native Russia.

More moves? The Devils were still looking for help on defense, but you didn't get the feeling Lamoriello felt this was a pressing need.

Jay Bouwmeester is said to be available.  Now he is an RFA, and he would probably be wanting somewhere around $5-6 million a year, but we could offer up, say Gionta and a pick or two to land him.  We shouldn't extend him an offer sheet, since if the Panthers do ...(more)

I mentioned this a few months back, but with the new season nearing, I figure now is a good time to ask again. I want to start a fantasy hockey league on CBS and wanted to see if anyone here was interested. If anything I think a group of at least 6-8 people would be good enough to start a league, and it would be a fun thing to do throughout the season. Anyone interested?

Russian forward Fedor Fedorov was signed Monday by the New Jersey Devils, ending a two-year stint in Europe.

Contract terms were not disclosed.

Fedorov, 27, posted 12 goals and 14 assists for 26 points with 117 penalty minutes in 49 games with Moscow Dynamo last season.

He split the previous season between Yarosla ...(more)
