The Sabres are expecting young defensemen Andrej Sekera and Mike Weber to become versatile, dependable pros. So they got Craig Rivet to help teach them.

Buffalo acquired Rivet from San Jose on July 4 in exchange for their second-round picks in 2009 and 2010. Rivet is a 12-year veteran who was an assistant captain for the Sharks last season.

"You look at some of the young guys that we have coming up, whether it's Sekera, Weber, in hopes that they make our hockey club, I think that the blending of the experience and the youth going forward is going to be a very good for us," Sabres general manager Darcy Regier said.

The Sabres wanted to add a tough, established defenseman through free agency. But they couldn't sign their targets, so they dealt for Rivet. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder had five goals and 30 assists last season. Rivet is signed through the 2010-11 season and is the Sabres' highest-paid defenseman at $3.5 million for each of the next three years.

"We think we've accomplished filling a very important need for the hockey club," Regier said. "Craig brings tremendous leadership, character. He's a proven veteran and a very good player. So when I think you put him in with our hockey club he'll make a very significant contribution to this team."

Personal message to Darcy:

So, sign Pommers already...

Stop Fussing around with Mathieu Darche and the AHL folks. That will sort itself out as they summer goes by...

$3, 4, 5 mill a year, no more, 5-7 years. Okay, what else is there to talk about? ok, then, get it done.

Miller signed a 5-year contract extension today. what are your views about this move.

For me I am glad that they finally stopped the bleeding by letting their good players walk. he is a good goelie that got over worked last year and this it should be different with lalime backing him up. Now maybe this will shut the detroit fans saying that miller will be a red wing next year.

So the Sabres basically traded Brian Campbell for Craig Rivet.  I'm really not sure what the front office is up to, I thought Bernier was a pretty good talent, and he was just as surprised as anyone ...(more)

With Marc Andre Feury getting 5 year $35 mill, there is a good benchmark for what Miller may be getting. Much easier to swallow than the $7 million that was bantered around earlier when Lundqvist got the extension...

Dipietro and Brodeur are both in the $5 mill range, Osgood just won the cup for $1.5

For the extra $2 million a year, we can put some people in front of him so he d ...(more)
