Ottawa clears the way for Gerber: Ray Emery was placed on waivers Friday by the Ottawa Senators, who intend to buy out the goalie's contract if he isn't claimed by another team within two days. Speaking before the NHL draft in Ottawa, Senators general manager Bryan Murray said he had grown tired of the distractions caused by Emery last season, and wanted to "clean the slate" after hiring new coach Craig Hartsburg last week to replace him behind the bench. After helping the Senators win the Eastern Conference title in 2007, Emery struggled this season and eventually lost the starting job to Martin Gerber in January. Gerber was one of the hottest goalies to open the 2007-08 season as he won 19 of 28 starts through December. He cooled the rest of the way only winning 11 games while splitting time with Emery. It also didn't help that Ottawa had a huge second half collapse. The good news is that Murray is a big fan of Gerber and Ottawa is expected to be a contender in 2008-09. Gerber passes the bill as a No. 1 Fantasy goalie, unless the team makes a move to bring in some competition. (Updated 06/20/2008).
