The recent signing of safety Ken Hamlin for six years and $39 million concludes the richest offseason in Cowboys history. During the spree, Jones has inked five players to contract extensions totaling more than $211 million, including tackle Flozell Adams, running back Marion Barber, cornerback Terence Newman, receiver Terrell Owens and Hamlin.
That number includes $58 million in signing bonuses alone. Yes, Jones has done his part -- providing a talented and well-paid roster.
Now he wants results. He doesn't just want to win a playoff game for the first time since 1996, he wants to win a Super Bowl.
Watching the Giants win only stoked the fire, and Jones is convinced the time is now for the Cowboys.
It all puts an even bigger onus on coach Wade Phillips to make sure it happens. It could be argued that, this time, Phillips has no excuses.
By the same token, his players, including quarterback Tony Romo, receiver Terrell Owens and cornerback Terence Newman -- all richly rewarded for being among the best at their respective positions with new contracts in the last two years -- have no more excuses.
CAMP CALENDAR Cowboys reported to camp July 24. The first practice was July 25. The team will break camp on Aug. 12. They will travel to Denver and scrimmage against the Broncos on Aug. 13 and 14 before playing a preseason game on Aug. 16.
