As expected, Bengals coaches were all smiles in public following the team's three-day, five-practice rookie minicamp that featured 46 players -- most of them participating on a try-out basis.
Head coach Marvin Lewis said he and his coaches knew much more about their 10 draft picks, and new defensive coaches -- coordinator Mike Zimmer and linebackers coach Jeff FitzGerald -- had time on the field to work with actual players after four months of scouting and office work.
"When you can get as much football in as we did, it helps the rookies coming back," Lewis said May 4 at Paul Brown Stadium.
Most of the rookies, both draft picks and free agents, will be back to participate May 20 in organized team activities (OTA) that will start May 13 for whole team. Those activities are voluntary.
Lewis said that veteran running back Chris Perry (ankle, shin) and safety Ethan Kilmer (knee) -- both of whom missed all of the 2007 season -- "should be ready to go May 13" for on-field work. Second-year running back Kenny Irons (knee) will not be available, Lewis said.
Asked what he took personally from the three days of work, Lewis said he often was left saying "wow" as he watched his players work on the field.
"But," he added quickly, "that's why we drafted them."
Lewis and his coaches had 15-minute interviews at the NFL scouting combine in February in Indianapolis with prospects. Some of the prospects visited Cincinnati. Coaches and scouts visited their campuses for pro day workouts.
"You don't see if they can handle install," Lewis said in reference to the process of learning plays and schemes. "You also get to see them playing at the speed of football in 11-on-11 drills. That matters."
In addition, Lewis said he and his coaches could see the functional strength of linemen they selected -- such as offensive tackle Anthony Collins and defensive tackles Pat Sims and Jason Shirley. First-round draft pick Keith Rivers, the Southern California linebacker, worked at the weak-side position, where he had in college, and impressed coaches with his fluid play and work ethic. Coaches were impressed, too, with Rivers' natural leadership and ability to call his position players together.
"He showed things that are innate," Lewis said of Rivers. "Every time he was not in a meeting he was upstairs watching tape on his own. He already gets it."
It's pretty apparent the Bengals would like to see Rivers start from Day 1.
"I think any time you can take a guy like we did in the first round and continue to do the things he's been doing for the last three, four years on his college campus, it makes that transition so much easier because he's natural at it," Lewis said.

I'm surprised nobody picked up on the article Peter King wrote about TJ's future status as a Bengal. According to good old Marv TJ's days may be numbered. This is due to the fact that the Bengals may not be able to afford what he can get as a free agent. Any thoughts? I'd hate to see him go.
Any other Bengal fan upset when the story about Odell is posted and see all of the CBS users post messages about "its about time they start cleaning up their mess" and "one down about 15 more to go" etc. These posters just come from no where who obviously haven't been paying attention to football at all in the last 4 months-2 years.
Kellen Winslow wants a new contract. Hmmmmm, a very loud, egotistical player, who just enjoyed a pro-bowl season, has 3 years left on his contract, has Drew Rosenhaus as an agent, and is sitting out the OTAs demanding a new contract...despite being a top paid player at his position.
Over the weekend I discovered that CBS will not allow me to have an avatar in which I refer to Chad Johnson as an a$$ clown, or Drew Rosenhaus as a d-bag. So in my attempt to not offend CBS' delicate sensibilities, I present my NEW avatar...flowers and puppies!
Goal Line Blitz is a GREAT waster of time! Much better than Solitaire or Minesweeper! Try it now for free! I would promise a free XBox or MP3 player like some of those web advertisements but then that would be a lie too. Use the link to try out the game and in the process I get bonus points. If you are a fantasy sports addict like me then Goal Line Blitz will appeal to you.
I hope Thurman can talk Mays into switching him numbers. I really don't want to go out and have to buy another jersey. Also Rivers is trying to get Brooks' #55 because he had that in college. I've got a #55 Brooks jersey and Thurman #51. This is gonna suck if I have to go out and buy 2 new jerseys because of the number changes. (I know Mays had 51 last year, but I hope Odel

Not that I'm complaining, but we've enjoyed a nice few Chad-free weeks. So I'm curious...what has happened to our (least) favorite malcontent?
1. Is he quiet now because Lewis called his bluff? After the Bengals turned down a pre-draft trade offer and after there was no draft day trade and and
